William Shatner has revealed he will be unable to attend Leonard Nimoy’s funeral.

The actor took to Twitter Saturday to lament that due to prior obligations, he will miss his “Star Trek” co-star and friend’s funeral on Sunday.

“I am currently in FL as I agreed to appear at the Red Cross Ball tonight,” he wrote. “Leonard's funeral is tomorrow. I can't make it back in time.”

Poor Shatner. He want’s to avoid being the center of attention and he’s gonna get slammed whether he goes or not.

I always loved Star Trek but I haven’t been a fan of Shatner’s since the weird death of his wife.

The whole idea of what the Red Cross actually is (charity in time of crisis) went zooming right over your head at warp factor six. LoL!

Of course Shatner is blaming them, for not letting him go.

Funny, at Shatner’s age, all event planners have a backup.

"He should hop a plane....." yadda, yadda....

The guy is 83 years old, for cryin' out loud.

Cut him some slack.

Just wait till all you boo-birds are 83 and can hardly walk.

No it didn’t and no he isn’t. He’s pointing out that he has a contractual obligation. Who that contractual obligation is too happens to be the Red Cross because it’s this weekend, if Nimoy had died a week earlier it might have been somebody else, a week later another somebody still. Had it been 2 years ago (ish) it would have been my company (he was “the draw” at our annual partners event).

Remember the reason people like him go to these events, it’s an investment. The Red Cross thinks he’ll help them raise more money than he costs, both in direct fees to attendees. The most Shatner did by mentioning the event is re-assure the people paying to attend it that indeed he would be there, they should still come, and they should bring their checkbook as planned.

If you think that’s blame, well, you just don’t understand how the world works.

They probably do. But there’s a reason the fallback guy is the fallback guy and not the first choice guy.

I think, regardless of what he decides, he will be blamed for it. No one doubts that these two had a great relationship.

I agree. If he backs out of the Red Cross Ball, some people will accuse him of going to the funeral for the publicity. If he misses the funeral to honor his previous commitment to the Red Cross, those same people will call him insensitive. Also, as someone else here pointed out, he's 83 himself, and, despite the image the public still sees, maybe it's not that easy for him anymore to travel around on short notice. If Mr. Nimoy's family has a problem with William Shatner's decision, it's up to them to discuss it with him.

Maybe FR could take up a donation to charter a jet for him.

Both of them were in a series of commercials a few years ago.

Capt. Kirk is getting back at Mr. Spock for being mean to him in the commercials.

Shatner is older than Nimoy—by 4 days.

I doubt anyone misses the passing of Spock more than Kirk.

He was there when he died the first time.

No need to turn this into theatre.

This isn't Spock and Kirk.

This is Shatner and Nimoy.

He's 83 years old.

He found out about Nimoy dying, yesterday morning.
He's got a major commitment tonight.
Nimoy's funeral is tomorrow.

You expect an 83 year old man to hop on a plane at midnight, to be at a funeral in the morning???

Yes he can. My son made it from the big island of Hawaii to his brother’s funeral in FL in one day. Lots longer than this trip. He could do it if he wanted to.
