Leonard Nimoy is missed.
My favorite Spock moment was when he was confronted by Surak, the greatest of all Vulcans, and Spock displayed.....emotion!
Surak even has to remind Spock to give the Vulcan salute. Spock apologizes for his loss of self control & Surak responds, “Under the cirumstances it was understandable. Let us talk no more of it”.
Well his very last turn as Spock was in “Into Darkness”, in the clip MHGinTN posts in #150, where he talks to his younger self and has to tell him who Kahn was, which is like having to tell a history expert who Hitler was. Maybe NuSpock didn’t recognize Kahn due to his mysterious transformation into a pale Englishman. ;p
Maybe it was the fault of the writing and directing like DJ says, but I never got the sense I was watching the same character with Quinto.
Similar problem with most of the other characters. Uhura was too sassy. Chevok lacked the mischievousness of Walter Koening. Clearly the fault of the writers and director.
Urban’s McCoy I thought, was easily the best impersonation, I don’t think it could have been done better.

Actually the new owners, Disney, won’t....they are pleased with the story but are said to be keeping Abrams on a very short leash!
Easily the biggest flaw in Into Darkness. When I was first watching the film, I expected there would be an ADDITIONAL twist during the Leonard Nimoy scene, with old Spock raising one eyebrow in reaction to seeing an image of Cumberbatch's "Khan", and telling his younger self that the individual they captured is obviously NOT "Khan Noonien Singh". I figured he was just claiming to be the 20th century genetically engineered tyrant for manipulative reasons and we wouldn't learn his TRUE identity until the very end of the film.
Alas, it turned out to be an epic level of lazy writing. Just cast some white British dude as Ricardo Montalbaun's character and the audience will accept it because he's so badass, right? WRONG.
It's even more depressing knowing this was Nimoy's final appearance as Spock. :-(
It could have been easily explained by having them say Admiral Marcus had his appearance (which should be as well known to everyone as Hitler’s is) changed so he wouldn’t be recognized (as a deleted scene or something explained why his daughter had a British accent). But no, even that simple solution was apparently too difficult for them. The “plot” was just a a couple very thin slices of bread to hold the action scenes together. Amazing that people got paid a lot of money to write that.
Chaplin would’ve gotten a kick out of that.
I’ve seen some sloppy crap on the soaps (with respect to casting and writing) that I watch, but that would’ve been unforgiveable (and the fans would’ve demanded a change). That was even worse when they changed Ming the Merciless from a vaguely Asian (albeit alien) caricature in the “Flash Gordon” film (and old serial) into just another white guy in a recent series.
Javier Bardem was one of the few people I could think of who could come remotely close to Montalban’s portrayal. I think I told you guys I had a strange dream where the late Ricardo Montalban came to my house for lunch and I immediately started in by asking his opinion of the “Faux Trek” film and recast and he just shook his head, “No. That’s not Khan.”
Soaps don’t have futuristic plastic surgery to make it actually possible to alter someone’s appearance that much, so they have to resort to BS Hollywood Magic plastic surgery (Have you ever seen “Nip/Tuck”?) or ignoring the change.
I recall “Dynasty”, the guy who played the gay son left the show, he came back after an “oil rig explosion” as a different actor. But then later they replaced Pamela Sue Martin with Emma Samms with no explanation given as to why she was suddenly less attractive and had a British accent.
Altering Khan’s appearance sounds a hell of that better to me than having no explanation given. (Better still, don’t cast Cumbersnatch, but oh we can’t have a villain with dark skin, no no no, even the old socialist Roddenberry is spinning in his grave)

Nimoy always seemed such a decent fellow. Someone you’d have a beer or two with out in the backyard.
I don’t remember, I don’t think we even got to the dining room table. I think I was standing in the kitchen talking to him about Cucumberpatch while making him a cocktail. I think RM was dressed like Mr. Roarke from “Fantasy Island.”
Back to the soaps for a moment, on “General Hospital” they’ve had one explanation for characters posing as others using a state-of-the-art latex facemask.
Yes, the switchover of Fallon Carrington-Colby actresses was bizarre. Emma Samms, IIRC, was more well-endowed than Pamela Sue. Samms pops up on “General Hospital” from time to time (that’s where she made her jump from to “Dynasty”), she looks a bit older now. It’s too bad Martin didn’t get the chance to take over from Victoria Principal on “Dallas” as was planned in the later years when Principal grew tired of the role. It would’ve been interesting to see how she would’ve played it.
I didn't know that, that would have been awesome.
I tell you, that speech she makes in the "Dynasty" pilot....hubba hubba.
The New Dallas on TNT was canceled, after a bizarre season. It ended with them killing off Bobby's son Christopher, who was incredibly boring. They had a fake out where Pam might have still been alive. Good thing she wasn't, Victoria looks just awful. Heavy smoking, bad facelift, something.
As I surmised, “Dallas” wasn’t going to survive without J.R. The “kids” just weren’t terribly interesting and John Ross was a pale imitation of his father. Too many boring male models in acting these days, and it’s hard to tell one from another. The only new person they brought in who caught my interest was Judith Light (there’s a reason she was considered perhaps one of the best daytime soap stars in the history of the medium). With better writing, she could’ve become the next J.R.
Apparently, what sent the ratings into a tailspin was that the fans were highly disapproving of the show going heavy into that Mexican drug cartel storyline and getting further and further away from the Ewing Oil & family drama. It was becoming another show entirely with a different focus. If Christopher had been killed in the ‘90s, it would’ve been shocking. When I watched it, I just shrugged my shoulders. You just don’t feel an emotional attachment to the characters. That’s probably the single biggest problem with tv shows today, and it’s a huge element.
I remember when General hospital had the story line about controling the weather and the WSB.
Yeah, that was from over 30 years ago. They still reference it from time to time. The “WSB” is also still utilized (although law enforcement, be it local or international, is usually about as competent as the Keystone Kops).
I afree with Billy Boy, xasting Cuberbatch as the actual Kahn was lazy writing, especially when it would have been so easy to write it differently, to suit the audience angst.

The cartel plotline, yeah, didn’t feel like “Dallas”. A shame it went out like that.
I was surprised they killed Christopher, but glad since he was so boring. All he did in the final season was date some chick with a kid, yawn.
A recasting, Melinda Clarke took over the role that in the 80’s was played by the delicious Beth Toussaint, who played Tasha Yar’s sister on TNG.
