In Fairfax, Va., a different, no-less-scary police shooting
CBC News ^ | Feb. 18, 2015 | Neal Macdonald

White privilege didn't protect John Geer.

That's not to say he didn't have it. As a middle-class kitchen designer living in the pleasant Washington suburb of Fairfax, Va., he had nothing whatsoever in common with the impoverished black men killed by police in Missouri and Brooklyn last year.

But Geer, pierced 18 months ago by a police bullet as he stood inside the screen door of his own home, his hands raised, begging not to be shot, simply disappeared into the emotional mixing bowl of American news and political priorities.

That should not have happened. The killing of John Geer is probably the clearest and most compelling example of what amounts to police impunity in recent American history.

He committed no crime the day he was killed. Even the officer who shot him acknowledges that. There was no struggle. The details are not murky.

But because no one was marching in the streets on behalf of John Geer, because he was absent from national headlines, the system was able to make his outrageous death go away by the simple expedient of doing nothing and refusing to discuss it.

Well.

Did not hear one word about this.

Sickening.

That’s CBC news, not CBS news.

My apologies.

CBS cares... why?

Hate to be cynical and yet it somehow seems different than if the protest came from FOX.

That makes it less surprising. I thought someone had popped a sanity pill at CBS.

Wait a minute. The Gentle Giant was "impoverished"? I'd like to see some evidence of that.

And in any event -- this decent may have had little in common with the other two, but to say he had nothing in common is a tragic exaggeration.

In this country, there is a crying need for justice.

If one cannot derive justice from the court system, then perhaps it should be derived from street justice.

What kind of poems are you writing in Baltimore? Sounds like dystopian tragedies.

None in a while, a thousand between 1990 and 2000... maybe 20 between 2000 and 2015.

Dystopian tragedies would be a good subject matter, though, considering the current trajectory of the world (and this country).

For the record: My "Removed" Comment #6 contained a DIRECT quote from the story of one of the officers at the scene. The offending word was not my own.

So I'll try again:

"And I'm like, who the f*** shot?" Barnes told detectives later. "I kinda got a little pi$$ed."

But only "a little pi$$ed". After all, it was not a cop who got shot.

It’s been fairly big news here in northern Virginia, especially since the Fairfax police had been stonewalling the release of the cop video for over a year.

Was the shooting deliberate? If so, it is First Degree Murder, by definition as there was no threat to the shooter.

Was the shooter’s trigger finger in his gun’s trigger guard?

If so, intent to shoot is clearly established by the fact that cops are taught not to put their finger inside the trigger guard unless they are going to shoot.

Execute the shooter.
