(Reuters) - U.S. regulators are poised to impose the toughest rules yet on Internet service providers, aiming to ensure fair treatment of all web traffic through their networks.

The Federal Communications Commission is expected Thursday to approve Chairman Tom Wheeler's proposed "net neutrality" rules, regulating broadband providers more heavily than in the past and restricting their power to control download speeds on the web, for instance by potentially giving preference to companies that can afford to pay more.

The vote, expected along party lines with Democrats in favor, comes after a year of jostling between cable and telecom companies and net neutrality advocates, which included web startups. It culminated in the FCC receiving a record 4 million comments and a call from President Barack Obama to adopt the strongest rules possible...

If you like your freedom of speech, you will be able to keep your freedom of speech. Period.

If you like your internet, you will be able to keep your internet. Period.

No one will take them away. No matter what.

The federal government can’t wait to control the internet by issuing licenses for web sites, deciding what is necessary for “the common good,” and getting to tax access to the net. If you like your foot-long phone bill, you’ll love “net neutrality.” And the wet-dream of the Left to reinstate their beloved “fairness doctrine,” will be in full sway on the net. Oppressive governments (China, Cuba, Saudi Arabia etc. etc.) can’t stand the free flow of ideas.

My God, this reads like it’s so amazing and everything’s going to be fair and wonderful. It’s no wonder half the country is living in blissful ignorance!

This is the Comcast protection scam.

Comcast TV faces competition from Netflix and similar others, so Comcast ISP calls on their government pals to regulate away Netflix’s ability to purchase sufficient network access.

The government is all to willing to oblige. They have their own agenda.

Even at face value, it is basically saying there is no place for Capitalism on the internet.

Why would I object to not allowing companies that can pay more having web preference?

Journalism "gotcha": How can Reuters make this statement, when no one has seen the thing?

"U.S. regulators are poised to impose the toughest rules yet on Internet service providers, aiming to ensure fair treatment of all web traffic through their networks."

Guess somebody just TOLD them that's what was in the regs, eh?

  1. There is no statutory authority for the FCC to control the usage, pricing, or any other aspect of internet, as a utility.

Utility regulations control usage, pricing, taxation, etc.

  2. We know what they wanted to do to newspapers, tv, and radio. None of those are utilities - which is what saved them.

Making internet a utility places it under their control. They will be able to claim that the “critical information needs” of this or that "community" is not being served "properly", that this or that website is "biased", that an ISP must provide "balance" in the websites made available over their network. etc. We know their intentions.

There is no reason for their involvement. There is no authority for their involvement.

Sickening. Can’t believe how fast we’ve lost this country after the blood, sweat and tears shed to create it, secure it, and grow it up. The lights are going out. Freedom is the casualty. I could just cry.

The telecom providers got a little too cute in their efforts to squeeze out a few more pennies, and they generated a populist backlash.

Obama picked up on that and quickly jumped on to ride the wave.

Get used to it. I believe that is what our politics are going to look like for the foreseeable future.

HR Chaffetz (R, UT), Chair of FCC & Communications is on CNBC right now complaining that this is another “we’ll have to pass the bill to find out what’s inside it” deals. The House is apparently going to vote on this turkey this morning.

A digital Volksempfänger is what the FCC would like to make of the Internet.
