Green Car Reports ^ | February 24, 2015 | John Voelcker

The new 2016 Chevrolet Volt is sleeker, has more electric range, higher gas mileage, a fifth seat, and should be both faster and quieter on the road.

...

For the record, the new transmission and final drive unit is formally known as the 5ET40 Electrified Transaxle.

The pair walked us through the five separate operating modes of the new Voltec system: two electric-only, and three blended.

This article is for those who are interested in the gory details of the Volt's powertrain. If you want even more gory details, look here:

Regardless, the second generation Volt is looking good.

And there have still been a grand total of zero fires from the first generation Volt in the real world.

“The first government-mandated car ever forced upon a U.S. manufacturer.”

Which was designed before the government got involved and was redesigned into a second generation after the government was gone...

It could slice, dice and carry the groceries into the kitchen....I still won’t buy a UAW assembled car. The UAW can steal my tax dollars, but they won’t get a penny from me in a business transaction.

Isn’t it also the first government subsidized car foisted on the US public?

These public-private partnerships are getting way to common for my comfort. This is uncomfortably close to fascism.

If there wouldn’t have been all of the political baggage, this would have been a good first-gen electric car. Hopefully, the second-gen will be better and cheaper without the rebates.

But while GM hasn’t explicitly said so, it’s no longer as much of a range-extended electric car (or “series hybrid”).

The new 2016 Volt should be viewed as a more conventional plug-in hybrid, with engine torque now being sent to the wheels through a mechanical connection whenever the engine is on.

Its a plug-in hybrid, not a pure electric car.

This is exactly what the market needs for an extended range car.

Toyota and Ford have already demonstrated the viability of the concept.

Which was chosen specifically by the Zero admin to be fast tracked and full court propagandized.
“All electric” and it wasn’t, among other outright lies they said to try and push it.
Sorry, the “it was from befoooore” canard doesn’t fly due to the way this admin went about it.

We all know what it should do, tell me what it DOES.

I dont care if it slices, dices, and makes french fries, its GM and I’ve abandoned them forever.

Like an old philosopher once told me, “Most anything made to do two jobs does each one half as well.”.

And let’s not forget, it is STILL produced and sold at a financial loss, meaning my tax money goes to it so that greenazis can feel good about themselves.
GM loses thousands per unit produced.
Plus, it still doesn’t sell as well as they hoped.
Any other production vehicle and it would have been canceled due to lack of interest.

Looks like a lot of high tech stuff that could break.
Imagine what the repair costs would be once the warranty runs out.

The Volt was described as a plug-in hybrid all the way back to the concept car in 2007, so I'm not sure about this “all electric” accusation you are talking about.
