Eddie Murphy was born to be an entertainer. His mama had a really big shoe.

Well remember. I don’t think my sister and I were ever spanked alone - we were always spanked at the same time - one after another. Our tears and yelling never made any impression on our mother. Then we would run upstairs and check our welts proclaiming, “she hit me harder than she hit you.” If we broke the rules and DIDN’T get spanked, that meant our father would take care of it when he came in from the barn for SUPPER!

I don’t think, no matter how old we become that we ever forget the spankings. Did it correct our behavior? I don’t recall that it did. Mother calling us in from outside with us ignoring her until she locked the screen door we would normally enter through and made us go around back to another screen door where she met us with a belt. Why on earth it mattered which door we went in, we could never figure out. That was more than 70 years ago!

” My mom, grandmother and aunts used fresh-picked switches from a dogwood bush-lots of sting, but no harm...”

My Mom had a riding crop. Only had to use it once!

Yep. I used to get w whippin at school, then I got another when I got home.

And talk about leaving marks... my grandmother would get after us with a hickory stick. Good Lord, stripe them legs. Then give us a hug immediately after.

Ow-I’m sure she didn’t-and I’m glad my mom didn’t have one! The only whips around were not used on horses-one of my uncles had a braided bullwhip that he would crack in the air when he wanted to show us how he could make cows go through a gate or into the barn by just whistling and snapping that whip near them-we were not allowed to even try to use the thing with supervision until we were about 12-13, because someone could be badly hurt.

“hickory stick” sounds like the farther-south version of that dogwood switch...

While I might disagree with Mom’s methods, I’m willing to give her credit for at least caring about the grades her child is earning. That’s more than I can say about many parents these days.

Hitting a child with a belt IMHO is unacceptable. Leaving bruises from a metal buckle on the child’s neck, shoulders, back and arms is unacceptable. Your kid is failing in school? Okay, here’s a little trick. Remove the social friends/cell phone/tv/computer games etc.. and tutor them. Yeah.. I know. It’s work. YOU have to actually help your kid succeed by spending your own time emailing the teachers/checking over homework/explaining the value of education etc.. The easiest way is simply to beat the crap out of a kid and make them wear some sort of stupid t-shirt than to actually “parent”. It’s easy to beat the heck out of a kid... other than the spent energy leaving marks and welts. Oh well... that’s just me. No one ever told me being a parent was easy. It involves work. Beating someone? Yeah.. that’s easy.
