After trip to Middle East, Rep. Ashford (D) is clear on terrorists: Kill them

The United States and its allies have the ability to destroy the Islamic State militants, and can do so without putting U.S. troops on the ground, Rep. Brad Ashford said Friday after returning from the Middle East.

The Omaha Democrat said he was encouraged by what he learned on a weeklong trip to the region that included visits with top U.S. military leaders and diplomats, the presidents of Afghanistan and Iraq and the king of Jordan. Ashford said he was assured by the foreign leaders that while they need the support of U.S. airstrikes, military advisers and trainers, they don’t need American ground troops.

“They can fight this fight themselves,” he said. “They can win this battle on the ground as long as they get the support they need.”

At first I thought this is a switch from the usual liberal Muslim "hug-fest". Until I read further: Ashford echoed statements by Obama that the militants are a perversion of Islam. “They are not Islamic in the true sense of the word,” Ashford said.

Geeze. Then this:

Ashford said leaders he spoke with recognized that in the long-term, the Middle East needs economic development, more secular education and other advancements so that young people growing up in poverty are no longer attracted to the militants’ message.
