I heard they might charge him with a “hate crime”.

I thought insurance was har’am for muslims.

The building wasn't insured.

It was a 3,000 s.f. pre-fab building that the imam dude said was worth $200,000. Now 3,000 s.f. is fairly big building, but not $200,000 worth. That figure is for the structure only ... the Islamic Center already owns the land.

This happened here in Austin this Tuesday, too. Homeless guy. Sounds like the muslims have a racket: deploy a homeless guy that their insurers can’t go after to torch their holdings, collect, and send the cash to IS or something.

Oh, so it’s a tax loss, then? To offset the ‘excess’ donations income.

Maybe the Muslims were concerned a Texas jury wouldn’t convict the guy.

A homeless guy who has already confessed to setting the fire isn't going to trial. He'll plead. And even if he did go to trial, a Texas jury would fairly evaluate the evidence and give the confession a great deal of weight. I bet a jury would not want an admitted firebug running around their community and would return a guilty verdict.

I just googled Austin Mosque fire and it all pointed to Houston. I heard it on local news in Austin... and the details referenced Austin but I can’t find an article.

There wasn't any damage in Austin. In fact, the Austin incident was a false bomb threat.

Personally, I think they want the investigation stopped for the same reason a person will settle a lawsuit to prevent discovery.

The homeless guy said it was an accident. He did not say he did it intentionally.

He admitted setting the fire. You are correct that he said it was not intentional. A rational Harris County jury would evaluate how often people accidentally set fires and dismiss his self-serving claim.

Dear friends,

I am an American who also happens to also be Muslim in my faith believes.

You can imagine how painful it is for me to read your comments. I know you are all good people. However the fact is that you have made these remarks show that there is a pervasive misunderstanding about Islam and about what Muslim’s believe in and stand for.
Take my example. I believe in America and its high ideals – one nation under God with liberty and justice for all. As a naturalized citizen, I have lived in this country – feel extremely blessed about it –for nearly thirty years. I have never broken any low or hurt anyone. Because of my family upbringing and especially what my faith teaches, I don’t lie or cheat. In fact, I do believe in the ten commandments - this is more of less what Islam also teaches. I love my country, am actively engaged in the community, and would anything to defend and serve my country.

When crazy folks like ISIS - a cultist organization by any standards - do awful things and the claim that they too are good Muslim, my family and I are greatly anguished and deeply saddened. Each time they commit an atrocity, especially against a Christian or people of another faith – it diminishes all of us. The religious minorities, especially Christians and Jewish people, are considered “protected” people to be taken care among Muslims. How can these extremists pervert and distort these teachings to such a degree? The whole situation of this cultist group (and that of Al Qaeda or Boko Haram) feels like a scene out of “believe it or not” movie, very surreal.

Friends, please help me answer this question. What should good law abiding Muslims do to reclaim our religion from these evil people?

Sorry for the long comment...

First answer this question.

Are not Dar-ul-Islam ,and Dar-al-Harb central tenets of Islam and to which a devout Muslim should adhere to the heart and soul?

I am not an expert or scholar, but from what I have read these are not central concepts in Islam. The idea that Muslims are bent of world domination would come as a surprise to most of the world’d 1.6 billion Muslims.

A central tenet of Islam is the Quranic verse, “there is no compulsion in matters of faith.”

Of course in the minds of the extremists like Al Qaeda and ISIS, there is a constant war between Muslims (Islamic world) and others (Non Islamic world). But that is far from the tradition of the prophet.

I believe there are around 50 modern day nations with Muslim majorities. None of them have waged a religious war to conquer neighboring nations. Their battles are with poverty and tyranny - for economic development of the people and liberty from dictators. Since most Muslims live in Asia (outside the Middle East) they don’t have the oil monies. Like America, many of these nations were colonized by the British and the French. Democracy and literacy were not allowed. Institutions were not developed and poverty is endemic.

From the very beginning 14 centuries ago, Muslims have co-existed with other people. When the prophet and his early followers came under intense persecution, he sent a group of followers secretly to Abyssinia (modern Ethiopia) where the Christian king gave them protection. The persecutors followed them and sought to have them returned as prisoners. The King asked both sides to make their case publicly. When the Muslim leader (of the small group) spoke he read the passages from the Quran which speaks to the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ to Mary...the king was so moved that with tears in his eyes he took his staff and drew a line on the ground and said, “your revelations and ours are so so close.”

I have a book on my shelf “The Covenants of the Prophet Muhammad with the Christians of the World.” by the Canadian scholar Andrew Morrow, which carefully collects several of these ancient treaties with the Prophet’s own thumb print as signature. In these treaties, he commands Muslims not to oppress peaceful Christian communities, but defend them “until the End of the world.”

Here is the link to the book on Amazon...

...if left-wing fantasies had been true and the perp was a Tea Party type, does anyone seriously think there would be calls to drop the charges?

If the perp had been a right winger this story would be on the front page of every newspaper in the country.

Hello Boston Globe

AND the Southern Poverty Law Center would have been saying "See we told you ...' Of course since the arsonist isn't a Tea Party Person the story will die.

Also our police are suppose to arrest criminals NOT ask 'Imams' if they 'forgive' the man. That's not how our system of justice works. Think of a world where the victim can 'forgive' a crime. Every thug in the world would be dragging their victims into dark places to negotianed them to a 'different' place.

Please explain something to me. My perception is that Islamic civilization is in conflict with all civilizations it comes in contact with. This is what Samuel Huntington -- former National Security Advisor for Jimmy Carter -- called Islam's "Bloody Borders".

Islam's antagonism against Jewish Israel is obvious (continuing). Before 9/11, Islam fought wars against Hindu India (1970s, 1990s). Islamic Chechnyans fought against Russian Eastern Christendom (1990s). Islam has long fought against non-Islam sub-Saharan African civilizations (continuing). And of course the West ... 9/11 is another obvious example. Muslim Bosniaks fought against both Western (Catholic) Croats and Eastern (Orthodox Christian) Serbs after the break-up Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

(To be intellectually honest, I must note that the Russian-backed Eastern Orthodox Serbs were the criminal aggressors in the Bosnian Wars. But it must also be acknowledged that the wider Islamic civilization sent fighters to support their co-religionist Bosniaks.)

Why does Islam have such Bloody Borders if extremism is the exception rather than the rule?
