Record freeze on Lake Ontario as 4,700 square miles of ice forms on Great Lakes IN ONE NIGHT

More than 4,700 square miles of ice formed over the Great Lakes in just one night on Tuesday.

The Arctic blast that swept the Midwest and Northeast saw a near-record amount of Lake Ontario was iced over, with just 20 per cent of open water left.

Overall 82 percent of the five water bodies sealed up.

Temperatures are expected to drop again on Thursday night, leading forecasters to predict that figure to climb significantly by Friday morning.

This reminds me of the two astronauts in Larry Niven’s “Lucifer’s Hammer.” They were debating global warming versus global cooling, in a book set in the 1970s.
One astronaut says it is cooling. The other says we aren’t, green house gases make it warmer. The first astronaut says it is a horror, the green house gases are delaying the next ice age but we’re running out of oil!

Ok, now everyone join in

Why? Is there a party we're trying to break up?

An excellent short story. The father was inspirational, in a way, deciding that he wasn’t going to let the end of the world preclude him from living his life, having children. And he lived to see his son rescued and join a group forming colonies powered by nuclear energy and hailed as an example for everyone else.

Have you ever noticed how I94 is a barrier that holds precipitation to the south?

My father claimed he walked across a frozen St Clair River from Port Huron to Sarnia, which would be a short walk if the river was safely covered in ice. That would have been in the 1930’s. Nowadays they use ice cutters to ensure waterborne freight keeps moving

Extensive ice is rare on Lake Ontario. In a more normal winter only the northeast corner freezes. I believe that only 1979 (near 80%) and 1934 (near 100% cover) had more ice this recent image, and there is still about a week to ten days of possible ice expansion before it is likely to reach equilibrium. Last winter may have come close, I don’t have any data handy. But they say you could drive from Rochester NY to Oshawa ON in Feb 1934, a month when some all-time record lows occurred in the region, including -50F at Saranac Lake NY and -48 F in rural eastern Ontario.

Meanwhile, some fairly impressive cold over the Midwest and Ohio valley is close to records set in 1936 (but not breaking them). See a pattern here? 1934 and 1936 were the two hottest years of the dust bowl era.

I think we may see this again in 2015. The western ridge is very, very strong. Temperatures have been running 12 to 15 degrees above normal in Utah and southern Idaho, equal amounts below normal in some parts of the east.

If that ridge migrates a bit further east, it will set up a mega-heat pattern over the plains states.

Cool, something to throw on the fire!

Yes, it’s been quite warm (for the season) in northern Idaho as well. I’ve been reminding my Bostonian friend of that (seven feet of snow? Geesh). ;-)

We’ve been peaceful with Canada for over 200 years yet we regularly get Canadian invasions.

Some of the snowiest upper peninsula years were in the 30s as well.

Lake Erie has frozen over completely several times, latest in 1996. You could have walked to Canada, but it would be a very long cold walk, and for what...it's just colder up there.
