Germany has rejected a Greek request for a six-month extension to its eurozone loan programme.
The rejection came despite the European Commission calling the Greek request "positive" only minutes earlier.
Greece had sought a new six-month assistance package, rather than a renewal of the existing deal that comes with tough austerity conditions.
However, a German finance ministry spokesman said it was "not a substantial proposal for a solution".

This is what happens when you run out of other people’s money.
Maybe I’m missing something here but why should Germany continue loaning money to a Country whose new leader has made it clear they have no intention of paying it back?
If I was in charge of Germany I would stop the money and have Greece thrown out of the EU.
The idiots in Greece have just voted for the party which wants to spend more again . The same idiots who can’t understand why they are in this mess.
Greece needs to go bankrupt and cease to get any loans forever more. It’d be a great experiment in motivation.
...by borrowing more and more of them.
After the LIBERALS, SOCIALISTS and COMMUNISTS in Greece destroyed the Greek economy, they still believe that all they need is to tweek the Greek economy, just a little bit more, to correct all that imbalance. I’m glad that Germany has finally gotten smart.
If Greece is let off the hook without default, Italy will come begging next.
Then France.
The entire EU morass would bring down even Germany.
Guilt for invading them some 75 years ago?
The EU disolution is beginning.
I think there needs to be a full accounting of everything the Greek government seized and where it went as well. The Government banking officials need to spend time in the Greybar Hotel.
More than likely it came down to a vote of anything has to be better than this by people that were having a very, very hard time financially. Long range vision gets lost when you are losing your house and hungry.
That is why the GOP ultimately will be to blame when the same problems hit the U.S. The GOP has been in power a couple of times (and again now) but will not act. The pendulum does not move back to center. The GOP has failed miserably.
Did anyone see the Ann Coulter column?
Germany greatly benefits from the Euro since it makes their exports more competitive compared to if they had to go back to using the Mark. Profits higher and salaries lower. If it stops at Greece, fine - but Germany doesn’t want the entire EU to unravel.
LOL! And I would add when you insult your banker... add what happens when your banker restructures your loan and you ask for a 2nd and 3rd restructure.
“And I would add when you insult your banker... “
Let me get this straight — so if I want to extend my loan, I shouldn’t call my banker a heartless nazi first? Who would have thunk it?
The EU would be throwing Greece into the loving arms of Russia. Now the Russian pipeline can run through Turkey to Greece.

Northern Europe has always felt duped by the Mediterranean countries that came on the Euro. Basically, they cooked the books to get on the Euro. I am sure they have the "don't let the door hit you in the a** on the way out".
Then countries like Belgium and the Netherlands look at the Scandinavian countries that are not on the Euro and see they are doing well. It would not look good if the capital country left the euro. I am not saying this will happen soon, but it is not good that Belgium regrets the Euro..
Those dirty Nazis, why won’t they give us more money, says the greek commie?
“Northern Europe has always felt duped by the Mediterranean countries that came on the Euro.”
So, the businessmen bankers of Belgium, the Netherlands, Germans and their bankers, were so unsophisticated that the Italians, Greeks, and Spanish bankers and governments could trick them? Got it.
The truth is that Northern Europe brought them alone in full understanding of them, for reasons that benefited them alone. This is no surprise to the EU.
