As gun rights advocates push to legalize firearms on college campuses, an argument is taking shape: Arming female students will help reduce sexual assaults.
Support for so-called campus-carry laws had been hard to muster despite efforts by proponents to argue that armed students and faculty members could prevent mass shootings like the one at Virginia Tech in 2007. The carrying of concealed firearms on college campuses is banned in 41 states by law or by university policy. Carrying guns openly is generally not permitted.
But this year, lawmakers in 10 states who are pushing bills that would permit the carrying of firearms on campus are hoping that the national spotlight on sexual assault will help them win passage of their measures.
If youve got a person thats raped because you wouldnt let them carry a firearm to defend themselves, I think youre responsible, State Representative Dennis K. Baxley of Florida said during debate in a House subcommittee last month. The bill passed.
The sponsor of a bill in Nevada, Assemblywoman Michele Fiore, said in a telephone interview: If these young, hot little girls on campus have a firearm, I wonder how many men will want to assault them. The sexual assaults that are occurring would go down once these sexual predators get a bullet in their head.
In addition to those in Florida and Nevada, bills that would allow guns on campus have been introduced in Indiana, Montana, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming.

Yeah, drunk girls with guns at the frat party....what could go wrong?
Alan, you're an idiot.
Self defense is self defense, no matter what the assault is. There is no "taking shape" to this argument.
Which leads us to the conclusion that the real problem is drunken parties, not rape and not guns.
Every woman should be armed! The incidents of rape would drop dramatically!
Besides, the Dems are the ones claiming that “1 in 5 women on campus are raped” statements. Those numbers would make the rate of rape on US campuses to be higher than the height of the rawandan civil war!
Yet they also want the victims to be unable to protect themselves....War on women...
Alchohol, drugs or not. People will do bad things. Everyone has the right to defend themselves. Just as everyone should use the right judgement in not placing themselves in ‘stupid’ situations.
The "rapes" seem to be more bunk than real (not saying it doesn't happen .. )
So a law that allows for girls to carry is, IMO ... one of the safest things for a girl
The worst that could/would happen (again, IMO .. ) is a feminazi go berserk ... in which case ... she will be found out and the law will (should) not be touched
I think it's a good argument for a good reason
Yeah, girl walking alone at 3 am from the library back to her dorm. What could go wrong?
—surprising that the NYT didn’t put more of an anti-firearms slant on this —so soon after their hit piece on concealed carry—
In contrast to anti-gun democrats, who NEVER exploit a hot-button issue...
Since it’s the slimes, I didn’t click for the rest of the story, but here’s my (semi) educated guess. Later on it implies that those young hot girls are not capable of or comfortable with carrying a weapon. Tell me again who is fighting a war on women?
The movement to restore 2a rights to college campuses is much older than all of this sexual assault business. The left refuses to research and stick to the truth.
“The left refuses to research and stick to the truth.”
They never worry about the truth for other issues, why would they do it for this one?

If they stuck to the truth they wouldn’t be leftists.
Are these college campuses even centers of learning anymore? Should brick and mortar campuses be closed down and education moved online for safety's sake?
