Men catch kids dropped from burning building, saving them [Brooklyn: Urban heroes]

Two men saved a little boy and his teen sister from a Brooklyn blaze on Monday, scaling scaffolding at a burning apartment building and catching the children as they were dropped from a window by their mother.

Davon Flunory, 20, and his friend Kevin Ravenell, 27, leaped into action after spotting Cipriani Lundy and her kids, 4-year-old Julian and 15-year-old Imani, screaming for help in the window of their smoke-filled third-floor apartment in the Eleanor Roosevelt Houses in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

“My first instinct is to call the Fire Department,” recalled Flunory, who was visiting a relative in the building when the blaze broke out on the fourth floor at around noon.

“They were taking too long, so we went out and around the building to the scaffolding, and we saw the little boy and his family waving in the window.

“We took it upon ourselves to go up there and try to help her grab the kid out,” Flunory said.

Lundy safely dropped both Julian and Imani down to the two men — but was critically injured herself after she leaped out of the window.

She was taken to Kings County Hospital in traumatic arrest and treated for life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

She was listed in critical condition.

Hmm...

Since we get the "usual suspects" who float around from thread-to-thread with their wink-wink-nod-nod "Amish" comments...I'll just "jump the gun" on this thread and make an Amish mention here...

And then let's see how many other FREEPERs come on this thread and mention the word "Amish" as some sort of "Cultural encoding" for "ID" purposes.

The name DID stick out ... for a milisecond before the story trumped anything I may have presupposed

It's conditioning, brother ... we've all been conditioned ... blame Pavlov

“Cultural encoding?”

I thought they were using it for racial encoding.

What a contrast today in dealing with fires and burning, from this:

catch kids dropped from burning building, saving them...

To this:

Islamic State militants 'burn to death 45 in Iraq'

God bless these two whatever their ethnicity. If I ever meet them I won’t hesitate to shake their hands and tell the bartender tonight’s tab is on me.

These young men saved lives today. I don’t care about race or ghetto name innuendo. When my time comes to rush in and help someone like they did, I hope that I’m ready to answer the call.

Note to self: Never live in a place called “the Eleanor Roosevelt Houses.”

Will give credit when earned, and these young men earned it. It’s too bad we don’t read more stories like this.

Unfortunately after reviewing the video, it was ruled that they did not catch the kids because they failed to complete the process.

Most people have their highs and lows. A guy with the same name, also in Brooklyn, and the same age, was recently arrested for being a drug dealer (page 3 of the pdf):

http://www.brooklynda.org/press_releases/pdf/jun/operation_pearl_harbor_roosevelt_houses_6_18_2014.pdf

And I found a fbook page under his name...also for a Brooklyn guy (I won’t link it here though), which confirms he is ‘amish’.

He did a good thing today. I think the ‘amish’ reference is more a protest against a state of denial. Sure there are lots of law abiding black people...I’m sure that statistically most are. But the media’s absolute fear of pointing out the ones who aren’t is absurd. So its more of a poke at the media and political correctness. And quite frankly, I think it actually hurts black people when we collectively pretend to not notice the ones who aren’t law abiding.

Congratulations to these young men on their courage and quick thinking. Not everybody can bring themselves to act decisively when the moment calls. These guys did, and that is to their credit.
