Agreed. Might also mention that the immigration situation was much different then, too...

Vaccinazis?

Yes, the Nazis were best remembered for ensuring Jewish kids grew up healthy without disease.

Saying that folks who are against vaccinations are using faulty science and endangering the health of their kids and others isn’t what the Nazis are known for.

My grandmother had polio as a child. She spent the rest of her life walking around on a leg with a metal rod in it, which caused her problems (as well as embarrassment, as he leg was withered) for the rest of her life. And she was one of the EXTREMELY lucky ones.

So all this anti-vaxxer crap strikes me as absurd.

If you want to stop the deaths, work to eliminate the disease rather than dragging heel and prolonging it.

+1!

Immunize the world and eliminate the disease from the planet, and once the disease is gone you can eliminate the vaccine.

100 deaths over a decade is 10 per year. Compared to? From the article: "However, by 1955, with advances in medicine and huge progress in sanitation, nutrition, and living standards, those rates steadily declined from 1900 levels by almost 98 percent to a mere 0.03 deaths per 100,000. The vaccine was introduced in 1963, and by then, measles was almost a non-problem in the developed world."

So let's do some math for the anti-vax morons in the audience. The current population of the US is 320,206,000, divided by 100,000, times 0.03 deaths per, equals: 96 deaths per year.

So, 96 deaths a year due to lack of a vaccine? A "non-problem", but 100 deaths due to a vaccination? A HUGE problem!

Now, that said, I think the anti-vaxxers should be allowed to not vaccinate their children. But I also think that any public and private place should have the right to refuse admittance to anyone who cannot prove they have been vaccinated. Let Darwin rule! Let the stupid people sacrifice their own offspring to their alter of paranoia! For the log-term sake of mankind, let the stupid people off themselves.

When you say "at current population and past trend", you overlook the "trend" part identified in the graph showing measles deaths in decline long before the creation of the vaccine. You also ignore that the measurement is "per 100,000 cases", not per total population which makes total population far less relevant. I don't think your estimate is accurate.

I did not know that a casual friend had polio when she was a child until she started limping. She told me that she had “ post polio” a return of the polio she had in her youth. Maybe your father is suffering from post polio.

You're missing the anti-vax point. Every disease that has ever existed for which a vaccine has ever been discovered was "already on its way out before the vaccine was created." Vaccines are a tool of the Devil to purposely make us all sick so that we keep making doctors and big Pharma richer.

You see, vaccines need to be avoided because they "actually cause more harm than good, and people die from vaccines." Plus, 0.0001% of the population have adverse reactions, so that proves it's harmful; whereas you can't prove any benefit of the vaccine at all, because the disease probably was going away anyway.

145,000 people around the world died of measles in 2013

When I was a kid everybody got the measles. I don’t know of even one kid who died. It was not widespread.

I looked up total deaths per year prior to 1963 with then current population. For about 20 years prior the numbers were fairly stable. There’s no reason to believe the numbers would have continued to decline naturally when the decline was fairly flat immediately prior.

My grandmother had polio as a child.

As did mine, FRiend. And one of her legs suffered for it. I absolutely commiserate with you. But please don't use a broad brush and paint all vaccines with it. Big med is big business subject to the same unethical decision making as any other powerful organization. Each vaccine must be weighed individually.

True, but the government and it’s agencies have the propensity to “sugar coat” the truth, while most all vaccines are beneficial, they always tend to push them while sugar coating the risks, however small those riskss may be.

I stay vaccinated, but I also do want to know all the risks.

Vaccines have a risk, even if that risk is .001% it is still a risk and I still think these things should never ever be made mandaroty via the “government power of the gun”....

This is heading for a trip back to the “good old days” when regular bathing was considered to be a cause of disease, bleeding will rid the body of “bad humors”, Jews were poisoning the wells, and mercury treatments would cure a large list of maladies.

The only problem here is how fast a disease spreads from the non-vaccinated population to the general population. And to think that the current anti-vax movement results in part from the spewing of a nitwit celebrity.

According to the CDC there were 6 million measles deaths worldwide in the past decade. This was in spite of efforts by the UN to get everyone vaccinated. A goal not yet reached.

In the US, measles was declared eliminated in 2000. Without illegal aliens, we wouldn’t have a problem.

Cases of measles pop up in the US every single year, among the unvaccinated and vaccinated alike. In 2014 there were over 600 cases. And yet ... zero deaths. Not for the last decade at least. You view the graph as linear and expect two deaths per hundred thousand cases in perpetuity. I see the graph as asymptotic where over time the count approaches zero. You believe there is no reason for the decline to continue without the advent of the vaccine ... Yet the flip side to that hypothesis would be that there was no reason for the decline to *begin* without the advent of the vaccine. And yet it did. Probably the simple result of improvements in medical diagnosis and treatment, and an explosion of natural immunity due to exposure. But certainly not because of the vaccine. The point is, folks are still catching measles periodically, both vaccinated and unvaccinated people, and they live. This raises the question of how effective or valuable is this one particular vaccine truly. Is it a life-safer? Or is it just "big med"?

We had serious reservations about Gardisil when it was first made available. Then, we asked several physicians with daughters who were classmates of our daughter, if they had their daughters vaccinated with Gardicil. All of them said “yes.”. That was good enough for us.

There are many scientific studies and references that expose inherent hazards with vaccinations, it’s a no-brainer that vested interests in the government, pharmaceutical industry, and medical industry are trying to keep the facts hidden.
