NRO: Scott Walker approved Milwaukee resolution demanding comprehensive immigration reform.

A neat scoop by Andrew Johnson, although I’m more interested in grassroots reaction to it than I am in the story itself.

“Governor Walker does not support amnesty,” the governor’s spokesman, Tom Evenson, tells National Review Online. Evenson says the 2002 resolution was “stripped of references to amnesty before passage” and, in fact, reinforces the governor’s view that illegal immigrants should face penalties before they are granted citizenship. The resolution, viewable here, did not mention or spell out such penalties, and expressed support for “comprehensive immigration reform” that would have provided “greater opportunity for undocumented working immigrants to obtain legal residency in the United States.”

After nearly a decade in the statehouse, Walker became the executive of liberal-leaning Milwaukee County after winning a special election in April 2002. The county board had been working on the immigration-reform resolution for two years and it came before Walker in May 2002, shortly after he came to office. According to an official record of the proceedings, it explained the reasons for the board’s support, including the contributions of immigrants to the county’s economy, their vulnerability to exploitation, and the fact that Milwaukee had played host to the National Council of La Raza’s 2001 convention, where the plight of illegal immigrants had been discussed…

Former county supervisor Dan Diliberti, who authored the resolution, says it was a symbolic statement of support for a policy of amnesty and comprehensive immigration reform. He recalls meeting with Walker to discuss the matter. “He was definitely for it,” Diliberti tells National Review Online in a phone interview.

So Walker does support comprehensive immigration reform — although we already knew that, given that he was willing to endorse a path to citizenship for illegals on camera as recently as two years ago, when he was already surely thinking of running in 2016. Curiously for a guy who’s running as a conservative hero, he really makes no bones about being an immigration squish. The most he and his team have done so far to push back on that perception is to trot out the talking point that he’s not for “amnesty,” by which they mean he wants illegals to meet certain qualifications before they qualify for legalization and citizenship, not that he means to bar them from that altogether. What’s useful about NRO’s scoop isn’t that it reveals some secretly held position, it’s that it reveals how long he’s held that position.

----

HE'S FOR AMNESTY, and all you Scott Walker FR Defenders will find yourselves in the same position as Bush Jr, Romney, McCain, or Paul Ryan defenders when all is said and done (even if Scott Walker somehow becomes President and betrays us all).

Just sayin.

I know it and you know it, but there are plenty who will continue to delude themselves because they percieve him to be a “winner” and that’s all that matters. And then he’ll say, “see ya at the signin’”, oh wait, we’ve seen that before.

Remember W. said in the 2000 campaign, No amnesty. In fact he was saying McCain/Kennedy wasn’t amnesty. McCain says it isn’t amnesty. Walker will say it isn’t amnesty.

It’s amnesty.

Vote for it and you will get it.

It may or may not mean anything. This was nothing resolution that he signed on to probably to avoid trouble in a democrat leaning consistency. This was not even an issue then. He may of just wanted to spend political capitol on something more relevant then. And then again maybe it does show a real side of him. He will just have to explain himself and be held accountable for an explanation.

I’m a Ted Cruz supporter. You can check my posts on this site for months giving my support to Cruz.

However, in Walker’s defense, it is possible to reject amnesty for illegals and approve of some kind of comprehensive immigration reform. If a person signs onto a particular law that’s already written, then he’s stuck with that law.

If, however, he says that he thinks the whole system needs to be revamped, that doesn’t mean he automatically supports amnesty for illegals.

I don’t agree with comprehensive bills on anything. I want a single focused bill. One on the border fence. One on process for returning illegals to their home countries. There should be a law that no bill in congress can be over 4 pages.

This stuff is so pathetic. Although recently I have been critical of Governor Walker in threads on the Wisconsin state board for his agenda at the state level this term, I will say in his defense that illegal immigration hasn’t been as big of an issue here in Wisconsin as it has been elsewhere. We haven’t yet seen the same problems the southern states are experiencing. There are relatively few Hispanic people in general and I don’t believe that I have ever spoken with anyone who wasn’t here legally. As Scott Walker takes to the national stage, I would expect his position on the issue to evolve and become more defined.

However, the good news in these sad attempts to discredit Scott Walker is how laughably weak these attacks are. Scott Walker is the most fully vetted candidate in recent memory. This is the best his opponents have got because it is all there is.

This was not even an issue then.

What? Myself and millions of other Americans were screaming our heads off about illegal immigration in 2002.

This find proves that Walker was off the reservation a looooong time ago, and still is.

You're defending the indefensible. Walker, as an American citizen, should already have adopted a principled stand against illegal immigration and amnesty.

Just because illegals aren't as great a problem in Wisconsin as in other states, doesn't grant him a pass on this issue. It's important to the very existence of the nation.

Did Scott Walker flip-flop on a immigration and a pathway to citizenship?

Wisconsin has many illegals, of course not like the southern border states but still a problem. In northern Wisconsin where I live they are here working the fields. Of course southside Milwaukee has always been Hispanic but now you can drive for a distance before seeing any signs in English. I wouldn’t recommend driving there to visit. It seems like a lot of the crimes are driving drunk resulting in homicide. Most of the shootings and stabbings has been Hispanic on Hispanic. We don’t have the home invasions yet. I can send you links if you want. I also think the nightly news has stopped mentioning the fact that the offenders are here illegal.

“It’s all is about the 11 million [undocumented immigrants],” Walker said. “You hear some people talk about border security and a wall and all that. To me, I don’t know that you need any of that if you had a better, saner way to let people into the country in the first place.”

Walker added: “If people want to come here and work hard in this country, I don’t care if you come from Mexico or Canada or Ireland or Germany or South Africa or anywhere else. I want them

OR

“Make it easier to enter the country legally”
Walker said he is in favor of the Senate immigration bill—that features a path to citizenship—but called it a backward “Band-Aid” approach, saying elected leaders should make it easier for people to enter the country and become legal citizens in the first place.
“Not only do they need to fix things for people already here, or find some way to do it, there’s got to be a larger way to fix the system in the first place,” he said. “Because if it wasn’t so cumbersome, if there wasn’t such a long wait, if it wasn’t so difficult to get in, we wouldn’t have the other problems that we have (with people living here illegally),” he said. Walker’s stance on immigration reform evolved over the years.

2010: stop suspected illegals; 2012: that’s a distraction
Walker’s stance on immigration reform evolved over the years. He said as a gubernatorial candidate in 2010 that he would sign an Arizona-style bill, which would allow local police to stop suspected illegal immigrants, if he were elected. Then, in December 2012, Walker said he no longer favored such a bill, telling reporters that such legislation would become a “huge distraction” from accomplishing his agenda for the state. Today, Walker said he would support a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants under some circumstances.
