Pianos were extremely hard to come by for live shows. At sock hops and school dances (usually in a gym or cafeteria) we were seldom allowed to hijack one from the music room or auditorium, but the Farfisa VIP, Matador or Combo organ powered through a Vox Super-Beatle stack provided a work-around for most bands. Some guys had a mighty Hammond B3 at home, but they were a bear to move around at a fighting weight of 450 pounds (not to mention the obligatory Leslie Tone Cabinets that weighed between 150 and 300 pounds each). I have herniated discs from moving those monsters around in the early 70s when the big Hammonds became a must-have for live gigs coupled with a portable Fender-Rhoads stage piano.

In 1965, Dick Clark launched a weekday television mini-Bandstand called "Where The Action Is", filmed on location on California Beaches with guest artists like Neil Diamond and The Turtles lip-synching their hits and Paul Revere & The Raiders as the "house band". Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart (the writers of many of the Monkees hits) supplied the theme song.

Here's a number by Wes Farrell and Bert Russell that in 1965 was a hit in England for the Yardbirds and a hit in America for The McCoys and one of the most requested songs at every sock hop. Each band featured guitar players that year who would go on to legend status. Jeff Beck with the Yardbirds and Rick Derringer with the McCoys.
