#17 – Billy Joel: “Allentown”

The Piano Man had been one of the most important influences of the Seventies, and now he redefined his sound in the Eighties with one of the great anthems of the era. It’s a glorious and beautiful song about the evaporation of the American Dream.

In 1965, Dick Clark launched a weekday television mini-Bandstand called "Where The Action Is", filmed on location on California Beaches with guest artists like Neil Diamond and The Turtles lip-synching their hits and Paul Revere & The Raiders as the "house band". Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart (the writers of many of the Monkees hits) supplied the theme song.

I did the same until I realized at 45 to 70¢ a pop 45 RPMs were not as good a deal as the albums of 10 or 12 tunes for $1.50 or 2 bucks. I discovered a lot of music that way (more about that later - stay tuned).
