I like Berlioz ‘Harold in Italy”. One of my old favorites, actually!

Schumann tackled Byron's "Manfred", and he set 3 Byron poems to music in his Opus 95.

Schubert didn't set any Byron, but that's because the English poet wasn't translated into German. Schubert did Sir Walter Scott ("Ave Maria") via Adam Storck, and a number of Shakespeare settings via the Schlegel brothers. Had he lived longer, Graham Johnson, in his fantasy from Volume 37 of the Hyperion Schubert Edition, had Schubert working with Dickens and Thackeray.

#23 – Michael Jackson: “Billy Jean”

He had been seeking a new image and sound for himself, and this spooky video got him going. He was about to become the Next Big Thing. This is one of great seminal videos of the Eighties.

Pianos were extremely hard to come by for live shows. At sock hops and school dances (usually in a gym or cafeteria) we were seldom allowed to hijack one from the music room or auditorium, but the Farfisa VIP, Matador or Combo organ powered through a Vox Super-Beatle stack provided a work-around for most bands. Some guys had a mighty Hammond B3 at home, but they were a bear to move around at a fighting weight of 450 pounds (not to mention the obligatory Leslie Tone Cabinets that weighed between 150 and 300 pounds each). I have herniated discs from moving those monsters around in the early 70s when the big Hammonds became a must-have for live gigs coupled with a portable Fender-Rhoads stage piano.

The great trivia question is who wrote that song.

That was written by Jack Nitzsche and the late-great Sonny Bono.

The Schlegel brothers did such a fine job on Shakespeare, keeping the meter, rhyme scheme and bawdy Renaissance wordplay, that the songs from the plays could be sung in either German or English. This is my favorite.

#3 – Patti Austin & James Ingram: “Baby, Come to Me”

Soul didn’t disappear in the Eighties, but it took on an easy listening cast. This is one of the best of the era.
