If education is an escalator to lift people from poverty, young African American males are languishing at the bottom level. Only about 60 percent of them will earn high school diplomas, and roughly four in 10 drop out before graduation day. Thats compared with a 65-percent graduation rate for Latino males and 80 percent for young white men.
Meanwhile, the graduation gap between young black men and their white peers has grown even wider, jumping about 10 percent in a little over a year.
Those are just some of the sobering takeaways from the 10th biannual Schott Foundation report on the state of African American males in public education. The reports authors examined national data on high school completion rates during the 20122013 academic year. They found that although the overall graduation rate for black males has grown to 59 percentup from 51 percent in the previous 20102011 surveythey are least likely of all demographic groups to graduate from high school in 35 of 47 states and the District of Columbia.
Simply stated, while most will say black lives matter and are important, the four-year graduation results in this report indicate that most states and localities operate at best, and have created at worse, climates that often dont foster healthy living and learning environments for black males, wrote John H. Jackson, president and CEO of the Schott Foundation for Public Education, in the report.
Pedro Nogueraa sociologist, an education analyst, and a professor at New York Universitysaid the study wasnt a surprise. National education leaders still havent addressed the systemic problems that lead to the stubborn achievement gap between black and white students....

"As uncomfortable as it may be, he added, there has to be a national-level discussion about school and resource segregation, a problem that has largely been ignored."
ie. "spend more money" on black school districts. Spend less money in white districts.
We already spend more money than on education than any other nation on the planet.
Here in the People's Republic, the poorest performing school districts spend the most per student. Obviously, that's not the solution.
Culture matters. It’s not a matter of race it’s a matter of cultural values. Embrace a culture that belongs in a Petri dish and you’ll find yourself confined to bleak prospects for the future. Embrace a culture that celebrates hard work, excellence and independence and you’ll find new horizons you could never have imagined opening up.
Make your choice, it’s yours, no one will do it for you, not even “Whitey”...
If this was true and they mattered, why did they kill 14 million of them before they escaped the womb?
To graduate is to act white. Can’t have that.
This article doesn’t mention all the racists with baseball bats to terrorize and to turn blacks away from the schools doors.
60% graduate, but many (most?) from “underperforming” schools. Which may mean their diploma isn’t worth the paper its printed on.
you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink
you can send a kid to school but you can’t make him think
in the black urban subculture, thinking is shunned
I think that was once true, but academic standards have been lowered so much, over the past 25 years, that just showing up for class will get you a “c”
Mild mentally retarded kids in Iowa often have high school diplomas because of special education. They will never hold a job, outside of a sheltered workshop, but it boosts the state’s graduation rates to push them through.
You have to work harder to flunk out than to pass a high school course.
Stop making excuses for poor performance.
The best example of your post is Anita Hill. She was an Oklahoma prodigy, glittering example of black cream rising to the top.
She went to Washington where she learned she was subpar, so far behind those that really could she was pretty much worthless.
Not all blacks are black.. their more of a tan.. or even beige..
Being “black” is mostly an hallucination... people with one white parent are NEVER called “WHITE”...
WHY?.... If you dont want to know why.. YOU ARE TRIPPIN”..
Liberals can only argue on emotional grounds. To them, it is the percentage of blacks that graduate from high school is low because, well fill in the blank.
The only thing that does not contribute to a person not gradusting is their own actions. It is never their fault.
So the solution is real simple. Give everyone that wants to drop out of high school a diploma.
This would achieve three things.
1 The liberals would not be able to complain about this subject anymore (they will however find other things to complain about).
2 It would remove from school destructive elements that make it harder for those that would like to learn.
3 Individuals would have increased their own self esteem for having a diploma.
Of course none of this will improve the life of those that drop out but so what, as long as liberals feel good, that is all that really matter isn’t it /s
PS - On a personal note, I dropped out of high school when I turned 17 and joined the Army. When I got out three years later I was still an unskilled, uneducated person with no future. I got a job as a day laborer and went to night school to earn my HS Diploma, and then on to College. It is not a complete dead end to drop out, but I will admit it would have been a whole lot easier if I stayed in until I graduated.
'earn' is a relative word.
White priviledge destroys black brains, cant you just see some white female dumba## with a t shirt reading this
Well, I'm glad that the Department of Redundancy Department made sure to account for that remaining 40%. We may never have figured out what became of them.
Want to know why this is so? Not enough Black Studies,it’s the White Mans school.
Percent of two parent families is low.
No father figure to instill dicipline,
Just moms and welfare.
