Brian Williams’ rescue plan crumbles as friends plead for mercy

The atmosphere surrounding Brian Williams has turned so toxic that it’s not clear when—or even if—he’ll be able to return to the anchor chair.

The original plan—Williams apologizes, takes himself off the air for a few days, schmoozes with Letterman, and slides back into his job—has crumbled. The apology was weak and inaccurate, too fleeting to heal the wound over telling a lie about his chopper in Iraq having been hit by a rocket-propelled grenade.

His statement that he had decided as managing editor to suspend himself made it look like nobody at NBC is in charge, that he is so big and famous that he answers to no one. And NBC isn't really conducting an internal "investigation" that would hold Williams accountable. So now he’s in a kind of professional limbo, with no apparent Plan B.

The word "mistake" is being repeated as a talking point - this was not a "mistake", it was a "lie", and the only mistake involved was telling it enough to get caught. What, precisely, that has to do with other reporters not questioning Bush more closely over Iraq twelve years ago is a question so wildly irrelevant that it indicates nothing but a desperate attempt to change the topic. Sorry, you can't try to put that much spin on a story without it falling apart.

I will admit to a certain satisfaction seeing a fellow who built a career on Bush-bashing at Katrina now being shown to be a liar on it. Williams gets no slack from me, nor should any other media figure who took part in that campaign or in the one that used methodical dissembling and misrepresentation to place the current vicious, racist, incompetent wretch in the office of the Presidency for our own collective good. Compared to that, Williams is only a minor offender. And what the big shots in the media are really afraid of is that they all have some dues to pay.
