Two students were shot this evening outside Frederick High School near the gymnasium, police said.
Officers were called shortly after 8 p.m.
The assailants, described as four black males dressed in black, are at large, said Officer First Class M. Cox. A SWAT team was searching the area.
Two students were wounded, and all other students and staff in the building are safe, according to an email alert from Frederick County Public Schools.
Lt. Bruce DeGrange said the students injuries were not considered life-threatening. Police did not release the victims names because they are under 18.
A junior varsity boys basketball game between Frederick and Gov. Thomas Johnson high schools was taking place.
Michael Doerrer, a spokesman for the school system, said there was a security presence at the game but he did not know how many people it involved. He said the school was locked down.
An email alert from the school system shortly after 10:30 p.m. Wednesday said that students who were kept at the school during the lockdown were released to their parents. The students were escorted in small groups in the parking lot of the Terrace Lanes bowling alley on West College Terrace.
Schools Superintendent Theresa Alban and Daniel Lippy, assistant principal at Thomas Johnson High, were let into the police command post in the school cafeteria.
Is the public safe? Yes, police Capt. Richard Hetherington said at a news conference this evening.
Reached for comment late Wednesday, school board Vice President Liz Barrett said, "Overall, I think our schools are very safe." She said she was waiting for law enforcement to finish the investigation before speaking specifically about the violence.
"My thoughts and prayers are with those injured," she said.

Maryland “Freak State” PING!
More social justice according to Holder. When will our government get involved with these actions that are happening around this nation?
Near the gymnasium, at least it wasn’t a vital part of the anatomy!
midnight basketball crowd

“Is the public safe? Yes.” says the police captain.
As long as you stay away from the gym and duck pond.
There was a basketball game going on.
Aussie-Finns?
We truly don't need Justice Department agents going around and shooting people outside of school gymnasia. Holder's people are far tơo involved already.
Something similar happened outside a high school in Pittsburgh in the spring of 2014.
Big national story for an hour or so. Shots fired at children, multiple shooters, school locked down, neighborhood locked down, etc.
Then it was established that the shooters and the targets were from a certain ethnic group. The story went into the memory hole. Within a day, it was hard to find it on line anywhere.
Stopped reading right there.

Whatever you say, captain.
Fake story. This is a gun-free zone. How could there be a gun there?
"when seconds count, the police are just minutes away.
Hands Up
This kind of stuff isn’t supposed to happen in Frederick. I guess its runaway growth over the past 20 years is moving it into the big leagues in more ways than one.
“When seconds count, the police are just minutes away.”
...means that it’s Do-It-Yourself Time. Got weapon?
