St Pete man builds gun range in yard, neighbors outraged

The Lakewood Estates neighborhood is filled with families and children. On any given day, you'll see kids climbing trees and playing on swing sets.

That's why news of a residential gun range did not sit well with neighbors.

“I don't know if this idiot is going to start popping off rounds,” said Patrick Leary. “I'm furious.”

Moms and dads are extremely upset after their 21-year-old neighbor, Joseph Carannate, told them he built a homemade gun range.

“I don't want to hurt myself or any neighbors. I don't want to hurt anybody. I just want to use this as my enjoyment,” Carannate told News Channel 8. “I don't want to have to go to a gun range, when I can just go outside my door.”

Carannate wants to fire his 9mm in his St. Petersburg yard, which happens to be just feet away from children. According to St. Petersburg Police, legally he's allowed to do it.

“I wouldn't have done all this if I didn't know the reaction,” Carannate told us, who claims he has all the proper paperwork for his weapon.

He says he will inform neighbors when he intends to fire his gun, which he hopes to do every other weekend.

Residents tell us that's not good enough.

Leary added, “You heard him say, I'll tell the neighbors when I'm getting ready to fire. What, do we gather our children and hide? Ridiculous. C'mon.”

The state of fruits and nuts.
Not a good idea. Heck I don’t even shoot my compound bow outside in a neighborhood backyard.

Just because you can doesn’t mean it’s a good idea.

Your freedom to swing your fist ends at my nose.

And apparently that isn't good enough for these do-gooders. They think your freedom to use your property ends if it's anywhere near their property.

Any decent Conservative is willing to accept some inconvenience or unpleasantness. I don't insist on my world being perfect and exactly the way I want it. What I do expect, is that FREEDOM and PROPERTY RIGHTS be respected.

The guy built a gun range? I say "Good on him".

I don’t want to hear that next door. There is a thing called courtesy. In this state it’s packed in certain areas. And if he’s on less than an acre I frown upon this exercise.

Likewise how about the outbursts/gunblasts when they reach my ear drums?

What we really need is a tyrannical, repressive government which uses force quite liberally in order to make sure that we are all courteous. [/s]

This is for certain going to end up in court. You’ve got two property rights in conflict. I don’t want to hear gunfire all Saturday and Sunday from the next door neighbor. I like guns, but this guy is thoughtless.

“The guy built a gun range? I say “Good on him”. “

He built a small mound of dirt. He is an uncourteous idiot.

That’s what some people call California. Even Telly
Salavas used that term on an episode of “Kojak” years ago.

This back yard gun range, however, is in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you SHOULD do it. Oftentimes discretion is the better part of valor. First off, that’s just part of being a good neighbor and the concerns of these neighbor’s are valid. Second off, this will just force the legislature to pass a law prohibiting firing ranges on residential property and all those people who live on 100 acres of land and who can safely operate a personal range on their land won’t be able to do so. This dude isn’t doing any favors for those of us who support second amendment rights.

Every weekend I hear a lot of gunshots. Sometimes it’s hunting, sometimes it’s target practice. I never thought to get incensed about it.

It appears most of the lots in the subdivision are in the 1/4 acre size range.

I’m pretty crazy, but I don’t think even I would try to build a gun range in my back yard on a lot that small.

Accidents DO happen, and while this man may have a RIGHT to shoot in his backyard, he must also be ready to accept the RESPONSIBILITY for any tragedy which may occur as a result of his exercising of that right in a densely populated area.

I live about 1/4 mile from a very much used Skeet and trap range. Fortunately the shots are 180 degrees away from my house. I knew it going in, and love to hear it. “The sound of freedom” I tell people.
That being said, it can be loud at 1/4 mile away. I cannot imagine having a gun range at my house or next to my house. The guy is an idiot. I can also start a farm and do anything I want on my land. It would be dumb to do so though. Just because you “can” do something doesn’t mean you should.
I am an infantry veteran, I’m not afraid of guns, mortars, cannons, or explosions of any sort.

As long as he has it setup right, I wouldn’t have a big problem with it. Seems he’s at least friendly about it by telling folks before he plans on shooting.

The noise might be un-nerving at times though. Regarding the comment by the neighbor, if he has his range well setup with a good backstop, there will be no need to “hide” when he shoots. It WOULD be nice for everyone if he could legally and easily run suppressors on his firearms to cut down on the noise in a residential area. They can blame the idiot laws for that.

We are controlled today ...

Because even Conservatives have an easy time finding reasons why -- in THIS case -- control just "makes sense".

PEOPLE -- you will never free yourself from the Collectivists until you become willing to accept the fact that some things will be annoying and you have to live with them. This guy isn't breaking the law, he hasn't hurt anyone, and he's using his own property.

When you place the chains on him, you are placing the chains on yourself.
