Tim Cook Defused Steve Jobs' Thermonuclear War, Then He Took Down Android
Forbes ^ | Saturday, January 31, 2015 | Evan Spence

I’ve already spoken about one of the plays made by Apple and Tim Cook to damage Android. This was the push to 64-bit computing in the iPhone 5S. As that smartphone was announced, the roadmaps for Android devices did not have 64-bit computing planned in the near future. Manufacturers and component suppliers were bounced into making bold claims that they would join Apple in the 64-bit world.

They had no choice but to do this. Android’s success was built around the promise of being faster, better, and stronger than its rival OS. If Apple was 64-bit, Android had to be 64-bit as well. Promises were made, plans were changed, and the rush to 64-bit comp

The impact of that push remain to this day. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 was the chipset expected to lead the charge, but production issues have forced manufacturers to delay products into Q3 2015, or choose alternative chips with the resulting compatibility problems of running third-party Android applications.

Apple weakened the chipsets in Android by forcing the manufacturers to follow them on the 64-bit roadmap. Resources, time, and developmental energies were directed away from competing directly with Apple and into something that has taken far longer than planned.

Are those other phone threads spam?

Not all threads are spam, just as not all email is spam. It gets to be "spam" when it's the same thing, over and over again.

No he doesn’t have to like Apple (which I never say everyone has to) ... he just knows it’s not spam to be deleted ... and he knows that there are FReepers who have a wide-variety of tastes, even while being conservatives.

We also have different forums so people can filter out topics they aren't interested in. Is this really "News and Activism"?

If a thread is a duplicate thread, you can alert the moderators and they will lock it. BUT if a particular “story” is told by different news sources, those different sources on the same story will not be locked or deleted, as THAT is allowed here on Free Republic!

For example, there are hundreds of stories on the subject of ISRAEL, but they are allowed, because it’s a broad subject. HOWEVER more recently, there has been a SPECIFIC STORY about Israel that has been repeated 50 times, but by different sources. That’s the story about Netanyahu being invited to talk to Congress. THAT is allowed!

It’s absolutely NEWS and VERY DRAMATIC NEWS in that with this product lineup Apple has made more than any other BUSINESS in this time span. This is HISTORIC! And it should be noted as an American success story ... something you would never see from a company in Greece or Spain or Russia, or Pakistan or any other nation in the world!

And those stories are of some political significance.

On a phone, can anyone tell the difference between 32 and 64 bit systems?

probably not on the data bus side.

I’ve seen the same story of Netanyahu being invited to speak to Congress and Obama being against it ... about 50 TIMES OVER AGAIN! That is not considered to be spam even though it’s repeated 50 times.

And this is of BUSINESS SIGNIFANCE ... as we’re about “business” here and the free enterprise system and backing companies who KNOW HOW to meet customer needs! That fits perfectly with our political/business philosophy here!

How many gardening stories have been posted in the last week, about growing the same vegetable?

I meant as a user. I realize that 64 bit systems can read from memory faster, and can support more accurate floating point calculations, but over the past five years I’ve followed the slow transition to 64 bits from 32 bits in both Windows and Linux. Performance changes were not very noticeable for most applications.

Eventually, when applications routinely use multi-GB memory, it makes a difference. But now, on phones, when 2 or 3 GB is the norm, I don’t think it does. That doesn’t mean that the move is a bad thing or unnecessary, just that the first to do it (iOS or Android) doesn’t get an immediate killer advantage over the other. They’ll both get there, eventually.

Talking about “business” has the INHERENT CHARACTERISTIC of sounding like a commercial ... no matter what business you’re talking about.

Then why doesn't every discussion about business sound like a commercial?

Apple has shown how it makes a difference in the gaming area and also with the photography apps which people are using to alter their photos. Games are more complex and powerful and faster, containing more graphic elements ... all improving the gaming experience. And in the photographs area ... doing modifications to your photos, which would have required desktop systems before. We’re GOING MOBILE and more computing speed and power is going to be needed!
