Family's version:
Mr. Davis witnesses a stabbing in his home. He calls the police. The police arrive and shoot his dog (really). Mr. Davis hears the dog being shot and thinks the man with the knife is back, this time with a gun. Mr. Davis grabs his own gun for self-defense. The police shoot Mr. Davis.
Police version:
Mr. Davis refused to drop his gun when the police arrived. So he was shot.
So what's the moral here? Don't have a gun? Don't call the police? Call the police, then "shelter in place"?

The cops are more and more likely to be nervous idiots. If you do have a gun, for heavens sake be discreet about it.

They are not the bold chivalrous knights of yesteryear. They are nervous, sometimes pettily vindictive idiots. Never say never, but exercise the utmost caution.

My grandparents told me this when I was a teen. My grandfather was a VP at Bell Telephone. My grandmother's family owned a chain of stores on the east coast from Baltimore to New York. They were very wise and respected people.
I took their advice.

I’m wondering if this was hyperbole, meaning call them as rarely as possible.
Surely, running a business, you didn’t just leave the robber you just shot on the floor.

Refused to drop the gun. If that is true, that is why he is deceased. Case closed.

The important thing is the officers got home safely for dinner that night.

Refused to drop the gun. If that is true, that is why he is deceased If I were the DA, I'd be very suspicious of the cop's claim that Davis "refused" to drop the gun. Why in the world would Davis refuse??? It was Davis who called the cops in the first place!
It's much more likely that the cop barged into the house, saw a man with a gun, and shot him. I doubt very much that the cop even ordered Davis to drop the gun before shooting him. An outside investigation is really needed here.

Shoot, call attorney, then attorney calls cops if such a situation occurs.
Usually someone calls the cops because they confuse law enforcement with social services, marriage counseling, therapists, or life coach.
Just don't do it!
