In a move geared toward increasing awareness of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, nine bars throughout Alaska volunteered to participate in a University of Alaska Anchorage study on FASD.
"It's a full academic research study, on the effectiveness of a pregnancy test dispensers located in bar bathrooms," said Ryan Ray, aide to state Sen. Pete Kelly (R-Fairbanks).
Most of the nine bars participating are located in rural Alaska.
Kelly Spokesperson Heather Shadduck says $500,000 was allotted in the FY2015 Mental Health Trust budget for the FASD awareness campaign, plus another $400,000 out of the capital budget for the UAA study.
According to the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority, Alaska has the highest rate of FASD in the nation; more than 129 Alaskan children are born with the condition every year.

What a total waste of money.
Not to mention how badly they are over spending. You can get those tests at a grocery store for about $1 each. Those are the cheapest tests, but for this purpose, the best tests aren’t necessary. The HCG Hormone is either present in the blood or isn’t.
They’re spending $500,000! ($400,000 on the tests if I correctly understood)
LOTS of this money must be going to “administrative expenses” for this project..... lol
I found the urinal cakes to be stale and salty, too.
Wax lips and pop bottles, they are certainly not.
My lesson learned early on from substandard restroom refreshments/wall-mounted bar lavatory machines that sell things was to take my children only to reputable taverns/dives, body piercing/body art and ink establishments.

It has to be a very expensive test as far as it seems like intended to work before copulation took place.:)
That is a good idea; if the tests are positive, I hope the women take heed. As I understand it, FAS is a real problem among native populations (so many women don’t know it is dangerous)
I thought it was $900K total. I will get flamed, but everything is more expensive in the north. Greater distances, etc.

Sounds like a classic capitalistic ploy to get folks to buy something they normally wouldn’t bother with. Some will use them as joke opportunities and others will claim that they “caught it” from the toilet seat they were sitting on when they “dampened” the test stick...
