Canada will introduce new anti-terror laws that will make it a crime to promote terrorism against Canadians online or elsewhere, a senior government official said Friday.
The laws will also allow anyone suspected of being involved in a terror plot to be detained without charge for up to seven days, and empower Canada’s spy agency to thwart attacks directly in a significant expansion of their mandate.

The real key here is how “terrorism” will be defined. Somehow, I suspect that repeating Christian teachings about homosexuality will be considered terror that gets you thrown in jail for 7 days.

The spy agency will now be able to cancel plane or other travel reservations made by Canadians suspected of being involved in terrorism. The new activities by CSIS will require approval by a judge. Police already have many of these powers that the CSIS will acquire but the government wanted the spy agency to be able to act right away if they see a threat.
In 1984, CSIS was created, taking over from the RCMP Security Service. During the '70s, there was great fear of the FLQ and 'Pequistes' fomenting rebellion and Quebec separating from Canada. The RCMP-SS was alleged to have broken many laws while prevent meetings of various separatists and communist groups. Among the most well known was the burning down of a barn in Quebec, to prevent such a meeting. CSIS was founded and the RCMP-SS dissolved to prevent such things; now, CSIS will be able (and quite possibly likely) to do the same thing. plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose!
