Biden: Four Years of College ‘Should Be Free’
PJ Media ^ | January 29, 2015 | Nicholas Ballasy

Vice President Joe Biden said four years of college should be free, rather than two years of community college.

“We’ve been ahead of the curve, except now people are catching up, no other country in the world had universal education for 12 years, including Great Britain, for the first quarter of the century and only until recently have they started that in China and other countries. Nobody has the great research universities we have,” Biden told the U.S. Conference of Mayors in a speech at the organization’s winter meeting.

“So what’s the next logical move to stay ahead of the curve? 14 years. If I had my way, and could figure out how to pay for it, there should be 16 years; college should be free.”

President Obama previously announced a plan to offer two years of community college for free.

Gonna happen. The majority is low-info and agrees with him.

A fistfight broke out at a local company between local engineers, who were deep in student debt, and their H1B colleagues, who had gotten a “free” education in their home countries.

There is an willing audience for this.

“Free” means-not worth anything.

Like the toy in the Cracker Jack box

Biden: Four Years of College ‘Should Be Free’

Translation: I want to be the next president! And if that means making wild promises that will further bankrupt the country, I'll do it!

How about first we get our 12th graders reading at least at a 10th grade level?

Seriously, if we want to equalize everything in the USA and make it a communist utopia, everything should be free. Why should some schmuck see a Challenger Hellcat and be able to afford it, while I’m stuck driving a Toyota Prius? If I want a Challenger Hellcat, I should HAVE a Challenger Hellcat!

Given the quality of education that Biden exhibits, I agree in his particular case...he should have gotten it for free.

If that’s the case, than what is the incentive going to be to get young people to join the military services.

If people are given a free college education they will find something better to do with their time.Than join the military.

And it should take place between the ages of 14 and 18. We can call it ‘high school’!

You’d think by now, at his age, Joe would have been told by someone that there is no free lunch.

Well, it’s true. In most other countries attendance at university is entirely or largely paid for by tax dollars. But in those countries only those who pass fairly stringent entrance exams get to go to university, and everyone else goes to a trade school or a polytechnic (like a trade school but with a bit more academic heft). And, in those countries the primary and secondary schools typically have provided a solid enough general education that students in bachelors programs take only courses in their major and related fields.

Maybe we should make a deal: fix the K-12 schools by breaking the monopoly given to colleges of education on producing teachers, breaking the hold of the teachers unions, reinstituting real discipline (disparate impact on “students of color” be damned), getting rid of fluff courses (and I don’t mean classes in the arts, I mean politically correct rubbish and watered down “computer” courses that teach how to use software packages), making the educational program as rigorous as it was back in the day when a high school diploma really was a sufficient basis for most jobs, then we’ll talk about reforming the American university system along European or East Asian lines.

If you want to lower cost of anything, the first step is to get the government out of the way.

Capitalism works best with few regulations, laws or subsidies.

There was a time when the average person could work part time, and attend college ending up with a degree (and work experience) and no debt.

The minute the government got involved the brakes were removed from any concern by the schools to keep control over cost.

This is true with medicine as well. There was a time when the average family without any health insurance could pay for their own health care (and for those without the ability, most counties had public hospitals).

As soon as third party payers got involved cost escalated.
