Cops Shutdown High School Kids Trying to Earn Money by Shoveling Snow
The Free Thought Project ^ | 01/28/15 | Matt Agorist

Posted on 01/29/2015 5:20:42 AM PST by Enlightened1

Earlier this week, Matt Molinari and his friend Eric Schnepf, both seniors in High School, were going door-to-door advertising their snow shoveling services in advance of the storm. School was out, and instead of sitting inside and playing XBOX, these two young entrepreneurs felt the fire of enterprise and decided to turn their down time into an actual dime.

However, Molinari and Schnepf apparently didn’t realize that in order to make a dime you have to pay a quarter — to the state. When the two boys were out trying to rustle up some business during what they saw as an opportunity, along came the uniformed agents of the state, to put this unapproved business venture out to pasture.

“We weren’t looking to break the law. We just didn’t know the law,” Molinari tells Jim Smith on his WCBS 880 radio show.

The cops then gave these two kids a lesson in statist economics, which consequently ended their high school snow shoveling business.

“They need a permit, unpermitted solicitation is not allowed,” Molinari said, recalling what the police told them.

In this particular county, anyone selling goods and services door to door must apply for a license that can cost as much as $450 for permission that is valid for only 180 days; after all freedom ain’t free.

Not only is it dangerous, it's a nuisance having people solicit me in my home. Infuriating, even. Get off my property. Do not interrupt me in my castle.

I'm wondering how many people here deriding this law are plagued by door to door solicitations? Not many, I'd wager.

Personally, I wouldn't put neighborhood kids after a snow storm in that category. In our neighborhood, the kids will walk through the street with shovels. I always assumed they did it because they were too shy to knock on doors, but some of them are probably doing it to get around our solicitations permits.

“We were just following orders!”

That's the same excuse the Nazi's used at Nueremberg.

But grandma had the right not to put herself in her car. When I'm in my own home and don't want people knocking on my own private property, there's nothing I can do about it if there's not a no solicitations law in place.

My home is my castle. Stay the hell off my property.

Teenagers, male and female, came to the front door of an elderly WWII Army combat veteran and his elderly wife to solicit. After opening the front door and talking to the teenagers, they knocked him down to the floor, brutally beat and kicked him until he was mortally injured, beat and kicked his wife until her ribs were broken and a lung was punctured, looted their home, and left them both for dead. The husband died, and the wife survived with permanent injuries.

Talk about a disconnect with reality. Geeze, man. Do you think a law prohibiting door to door solicitation would have prevented those violent criminals from going door to door to look for victims?

What kind of liberal logic is that?

So teens can't get work shoveling snow without forking out $500 for a permit and that is to prevent criminals from breaking in and killing people?

I really don't get your logic. That sounds like something we would read on some left wing blog.

As a teenager some of us friends would go to visit an elderly couple and the man was a WW1 vet. He would share stories and what-not, serve us tea— I think we helped him with a chore or two. Yeh Mr. Jones was our friend who was just a lifetime older than us.
The horrible thought of ever hurting that old couple never crossed the mind.

In our town, which has the permit solicitations law, teens absolutely can get work shoveling. A lot of times, I see them walking through the street with their shovels. Once the neighbors see their work on one house, those kids always have more work than they want because people shout over to do them next. They also can leaflet people’s homes at the beginning of winter - then all the old ladies have the kids’ names and numbers.

Here's the problem with this.

The kids were "soliciting."

If instead, they were just walking down the street and a neighbor called out and said, "Hey, kid! How'd you like to earn a few dollars by shoveling the snow off my property?" then they'd be alright because it's all done privately on private property.

The cops would have no right to interfere with what a homeowner does on his own property at his initiation.

It's that the kids initiated the transaction by seeking it out. Next time, word of mouth would be the way to go.

I hate Nazis...

And this is as perfect an example of Socialism as it gets.

Anything not mandatory is forbidden. For the greater good.

You’re absolutely right. I think a lot of the people on this thread don’t get the door to door salesmen in their neighborhoods. They don’t realize what a nuisance they are.

exactly and the job of a job is to enforce laws and yet the anarchists and cop haters who I see are back after hiding since the cops were shot in NY are saying you ignore their jobs now.

To also use the NAZI analogy is pathetic and far stretched

correct but the narrative here is to try and demean all cops again. One only has to look at the usual usernames to see they have come out of hiding now it’s died down after the NYPD lost two of theirs.

Hate door to door sales and that goes for the girl scouts too who I never buy off

Geez Louise. Nazis??

May all the door to door solicitors that have darkened my doorway since the economy went bad find their way to yours. Then we'll talk about how stupid the law is.

Nice anti-freedom stance you’ve got there...

Got a thing against Girlscout cookie stands, fund raiser car washes, and lemonade stands as well?

‘Cause... yeah... SOCIALIST laws like this have been used to shut the above listed folks down too.

Then put up a sign and call the gendarmes if they trespass.

Advocating for a LAW like this is just idiotic.

It’s not a dumb law. Door to door solicitation is a pain in the arse and before they put these laws into place, people were bugged non-stop in many areas.

They could have handed out flyers.
