1 In 5 American Kids Rely On Food Stamps

America is a global leader on a number of fronts, including having the largest economy in the world. But here is one area where the U.S., given its general affluence, would rather not distinguish itself: It has one of the highest rates of child poverty in the industrialized world.

Even as the economy continues to recover from the Great Recession, 1 in 5 children are on food stamps, the U.S. Census said on Wednesday. Before the housing crash, 1 in 8 received federal food assistance.

This dismal statistic reflects how the recovery is failing to reach families at the lower end of the economic spectrum. While the stock market has reached record highs and the richest 1 percent are on a path to own most of the world's wealth by 2016, many American families continue to struggle to put food on the table. The U.S. now has the second-highest rate of child poverty among 35 industrialized nations, according to the Children's Defense Fund, a child advocacy group

nobama is no doubt thrilled to death with this stat. He's doing all he can everyday to turn us into a government dependent turd world country.

To his way of thinking, there can never be enough people on food stamps, disability, etc. He anxiously awaits the day when the US has the highest rate of child poverty.

That has more to do with our absurd definition of poverty than anything else.

And the title is misleading. 1 in 5 children rely on food stamps should be 1 in 5 children live in families that receive food stamps. Whether they rely on them or not is another issue.

Good food - quality meats, fresh produce, etc., is expensive. There's no way around that. But the traditional staples are dirt cheap.

When my mother was growing up, she had neighbors that lived on feed corn and greens. A fifty pound bag of feed corn costs less than $6. It's not the perfect food, but it's healthier than the processed crap our kids are killing themselves with at the convenience store.

Because of the abuses of the food stamp program.

Some of those kids living in poverty probably could be fed nourishing food——if the potato chips and soda weren’t purchased.

I was poor as a child. No free lunches and breakfast at school.

I know poor.

But I also know sacrifice.

Some of these folks keep having children, without a father in the home. Therefore creating more children in poverty.

I’m weary of the entire thing-——and our dear leader keeps importing more of these folks.

And one in four American kids, including most tall of the one in five who rely upon food stamps, get breakfast, lunch and even dinner provided free to them as part of head start or school lunch programs.

This is true even during the summer months when school is out in many districts.

Food stamps - it's not just for food anymore.

I keep waiting for the American voter to wake up and become outraged at the fraud and abuse of our social welfare system.

I'm still waiting.

Johnathon Gruber assures me that die to the apathy and economic illiteracy of the American people I will be waiting for a very long time

Many of these parents don’t get married just so the mama can get her gov’t benefits. It’s all the rage now. This is driving up the 1 in 5 kids numbers. Three of my BIL’s children are taking advantage this way. Umpteen babies between them and none of them will even consider marriage. No one bats an eye.

Pack of thieves, IMO.

A lot of poor people’s existence is subsidized by taxpayer’s money. The “war on poverty” is never over until the war on the poor actually starts. When the poor (aka parasites) know that they will not be getting freebies, will they stop being poor and work for a change. Not to mention that these poor people spawn more parasites and the circle of life continues.

When Alexis de Toqueville toured America in 1831,he remarked on the presence of entire families in the cities, rural areas and the frontier who seemed to satisfied to live on the charity of others. Who refused to make an effort in the midst of rampant opportunity.

Regardless of geography or demography, he estimated the proportion of such families as one in seven. And, since it began, statistics for the War on Poverty have consistently shown the proportion of Ammerican families living in poverty to be unchanging at about...one in seven.
