What the Irish media are saying about New Orleans after Irish police officer was shot

Irish news media focused Wednesday on New Orleans after a vacationing Irish police officer was shot in the 7th Ward. The Irish Daily Mirror said the officer is now in intensive care.

Reports said Officer Brian Hanrahan was visiting New Orleans as part of a road trip with father, who lives in Missouri. Local residents are raising money for Hanrahan's medical and travel expenses.

Read more about what NOPD said happened during the shooting.

Journalists from Ireland had plenty to say about the city where Hanrahan was shot, and in some cases, nuances were lost. Some news outlets showed photos of Bourbon Street while discussing crime at least 1 and 1/2 miles away in the 7th Ward. Others said the officer was on a Route 66 road trip, perhaps a metaphorical reference to the storied Chicago-Los Angeles highway that, at any rate, is no closer than 600 miles to New Orleans.

Many used the term garda, roughly the Irish equivalent of police officer.

Some excerpts from Irish media:

"This garda is a big strong lad. He is a nice guy who gets on well with everybody. But if somebody challenged him in a mugging he would not simply give up his cash." -- Irish Daily Mirror

"He's big into the strong man competitions now. He got into it recently. He is strong." -- BreakingNews.ie

"He's a tall lad with red hair. ... I think his spleen and his kidneys are in a bit of bother and the shot to the leg went straight through. I heard he was put into a medically induced coma overnight but I don't know how true that is. ... I know he got fairly knocked up." -- Sunday World

I guess he's not one of the Lucky ones.

It's hard to read the excerpts from the Irish media without using an Irish accent.

Smoked Irishmen. They got locked in the smokehouse, you know, and went to America.

Well, this will probably turn into a bashing NOLA thread and loving Irish people thread. The Irish now hate America and are considered the most anti-Israel Europeans by the Israelis. San Diego is still trying to ban Irish exchange students from its city due to their drunken, violent behavior. I’m very sorry anyone got hurt in New Orleans but the Irish press is insanely hateful towards our country.

He's European! Are you certain that you know *all* the places in London,Paris or Rome that should be avoided?

IIRC the "Garda" is the Irish national police force, roughly equivalent to Canada's RCMP.

I try to be very street aware when traveling overseas. I don't leave tourist and business districts unless I've done some research and understand the neighborhood. Without doing that I would tell you I would never take off on a stroll in the East End of London or a Parisian banlieue.

From the map it looks like this guy struck out walking north out of the French Quarter and into a residential district north of I-10. I sure wouldn't do that.

Travellers must be aware of dangerous neighborhoods. If the guide books don’t tell you, the internet certainly will. I go to NOLA all the time - keep to the French Quarter and downtown and that’s it. Great restaurants, beautiful architecture, nice people. And I try to avoid Bourbon St.

Isn’t the 7th Ward a no-go zone for people lacking the proper skin tone?

Pretty much, yes. Persons of pallor may safely (well, more or less) pass through that zone between daybreak and 9:00 a.m., before the locals wake up.
