Forget the post-PC era. The Mac just continues to get bigger. For its fiscal 2015 first quarter that ended Dec. 27, 2014, Apple sold 5.5 million Macs. That’s up 9% year-over-year and up 14% from the previous quarter and brought in revenue of US$6.9 billion.

Apple has gained market share verses Windows PCs in all quarters since 2005 but one. The Mac has surpassed overall PC growth for 34 of the last 35 quarters. The Mac’s unit share of the worldwide PC market has grown from 2.1% in 2005 to 5.5% in 2013. Apple’s U.S. market share is somewhere between 10% and 14%, depending on whose statistics you believe.

To each his own. I own Mac Products and PCs. Some folks like getting in touch with their inner child!
I bought my first Mac in the early 90’s, liked it and decided to invest in the company. Over a few years I spent about $16,000 on Apple stock and just “let it ride” through good times and bad. Today its worth about $287,000 or a 1,700% pre-tax gain.
I doubt that “Toys Are Us” does as well! :-)

You have to buy the hardware from Apple, or an Apple authorized dealer.

With the “PCs” ... there are a lot of generic parts there, and while there are some generic parts for the Macintosh computers, they also have special parts and chips from Apple, that only Apple has ... and the hardware and software are specifically “tuned” with one another, to run the best possible.

You’re not talking about an ordinary “PC” here ...

Legally, Apple doesn’t sell the OS as an independent piece of software, they sell integrated systems. So, no. (Well yes, but “Hackintoshes” come with no support and a bit of legal peril, especially if you’re trying to sell them.)

“..i’ve been using PC’s since the early 90’s ..”

I think we’ve found your problem. I worked in a Silicon Valley company that had upwards of 1,000 Macs and the IT department was a couple of guys. Worst thing I had was a hard drive failure in 9 years there, and the drive’s data was recovered and sent back to my new disc on the net. I also worked for a very well-know Silicon Valley company (actually right next door to H-P’s corporate HQ) that was PC-based and it was a mess. The biggest problem with PC’ s while they all work the same (more or less) they are not all built the same and therein lies the problem. With PC’s you need to buy ALL your requirements from a single one of the major mfr’s and replace them every three years. At least that was what I found in the corporate environment. And it sure took Apple to lead the way in the GUI user interface, and force PC’s away from DOS.

“Now that you mention it, his comment really does raise serious questions about what he actually does with his computers...”

Yeah, it does, doesn’t it. I don’t know about you but I don’t think about my computer when I’m “lonely!”

“I read that the Microsoft Surface software will NOT be updatable to Windows 10, as well.”

That is not true.

This is the problem with people when it comes to discussing Windows. They first start off on stuff that is completely fictitious. Then launch into the cliched “everything they do is terrible” story, and then swan dive into “my friend is going to go buy a Mac after using Windows for 700 years”.

It has been done to death. An OS that is so horrid, so unusable that more people use it than anything Apple puts out. Even the 11 year-old version of it! And then when you actually ask what are people doing on Macs that is so spectacular, you basically get little more than being in a web browser and typing in Office.

What I dont get is their pride in crowing about how utterly clueless they are in using a PC.

I’m sitting here using a Windows 8.1 machine, and for the the life of me I’ve never struggled with it. But you hear people that buy a Mac almost to a person give stories about how they they cant operate Windows because it is “too hard”, but then go and buy an entirely different OS, that isnt any easier to use, but because people say “it’s effortless”, they then will swear that they learned how to use it on the first day!

Which of course is nonsense or else all of those help forums would be empty, and their “Genius Bars” at the Apple stores would be shuttered.

I suppose when the reality gets in the way of the marketing, you dont want to be the one crowing about how hard a time you are having using a Mac after making such a show about switching to it.

I bought a new MacBook Pro to replace my older one on the day after Christmas.

The store was jammed. Some Chinese guy was buying 6 iPhones.

Some folks only drive Fords. Some only use Mobil gas, smoke Marlboros, drink Budweiser. Brand loyalty is not a new concept and all companies promote it.
It only works when people like the product.

Yep that’s often very true. But with the lastest PCs (like the acer aspire S3 or the surface 3) they do better than Macs with windows.

But it took Macs to push the PC crowd into making better hardware vice just cutting costs.

““I read that the Microsoft Surface software will NOT be updatable to Windows 10, as well.”

That is not true.”

What is not true? I spent my own money to buy a windows 8.1 2 in 1 tablet, and I don’t like it.

If I could do it over again, I would have done something else. I have used Windows since 3.0.

My consultant friend has used it since 2.0 and he suggested (not advised) considering Apple, for the first time in about 25 years.

Don’t ridicule my story, by suggesting it is false, repetitive or contrived.

The article is about the successes of Apple of late. The marketplace proves the RECENT problems with Microsoft products.

So now explain all the technical stuff I need to understand about upgrading the software running a Microsoft Surface device?
