NEW YORK (AP) — While Joan Rivers lay sedated in a Manhattan clinic, her doctors performed unauthorized medical procedures, snapped a selfie with the comedian and failed to act as her vital signs deteriorated, according to a malpractice lawsuit filed Monday by her daughter, Melissa.
The 81-year-old comedian and star of "Fashion Police" on E! died Sept. 4, days after she went in for a routine endoscopy at Yorkville Endoscopy on Manhattan's Upper East Side and stopped breathing.
The lawsuit filed in Manhattan State Supreme Court paints a picture of a careless, cocky staff of doctors who ran roughshod over Rivers while she was unconscious, and it suggests that she died because of their incompetence. The suit seeks unspecified damages.
Melissa Rivers said in a statement that filing the lawsuit was one of the most difficult decisions she had to make.
"What ultimately guided me was my unwavering belief that no family should ever have to go through what my mother, Cooper and I have been through," she said, referring to her son. "The level of medical mismanagement, incompetency, disrespect and outrageous behavior is shocking and frankly, almost incomprehensible."
She said her mother deserved better.

As a nurse that works in the OR, I’ve been following this story closely. These physicians handled themselves so egregiously,they should be left with nothing at the end of this case. Smug arrogant jerks.

I agree. If that claim is true, then these guys should be required to pay and pay and pay some more - and then their licenses to practice medicine should be revoked.
Agree with you completely. This is no nuisance lawsuit. There was obvious, and fatal, malpractice.

Even worse, the female “voice doctor to the stars” Gwen somebody apparently left the room as things fell apart due to not being authorized to be there. Totally abandoned Joan.
She likely laryngospasmed and just need a tracheostomy to recover. All three doctors being unable to do that for her and continuing to effectively resucitate her is breathtakingly incompetent.
Hopefully Melissa will win an extremely large sum and since she is already rich, will put it to a useful cause.
Hope they uncover Obama’s role after Rivers called him and Mooch homosexuals.
Joan was on Profofol(The same drug that killed Michael Jackson) the schmuck doctor, while Joan was under sedation and probably in the process of dying, took a “Selfie” of her..Joan Rivers should have NEVER gone to this clinic, the doctor had written an article a few years ago saying that for an endoscopy, having an Anesthesiologist in the room is a “Waste of money.” When dealing with Profofol you always need a trained professional in the room because its not a regular sedation
Any competent anesthesia provider could break a laryngospasm without a trach. But I agree w your above comment: sue the pants off these turds. They’re an embarrassment to the medical profession.
Agreed. However in this case there was an anesthesiologist in the room. Epic fail on her part.
Here’s her taking their last dime, their licenses and get charges that put them behind bars for a very long time. Maybe some good will come from the money.
“Stars” in general get horrible medical care.
They are used to bossing around everyone in their universe, and they seek out (and find) doctors who are pathetic enough to do what they are told to do instead of what they should do.
We don’t know who the heck was in the room because if there were a an anesthesiologist in the room no way would she have died..that’s the whole point, to monitor her. My brother had a colonoscopy done last Friday, he paid for the doctor AND the anesthesiologist to be in the room with him because for profofol you must have one in the room at all times. When I have gotten sedated I don’t use profofol so for regular sedation it can be done by your doctor, but with profofol you must have one in the room..don’t know what those idiots were doing at the time but they were NOT watching her, they just let her die..she died for nothing..a simple endoscopy my Mom has one every two years, its not a surgery its just to check your throat and stomach and for this she died
