McManus is a mechanical engineer and his wife Mairee is a surgical physician's assistant, as well as the primary earner. He breaks out his budget by week. In 2014, they brought home an average after-tax household income of $14,735 a month.

In the chart below, check out their average monthly spending for 2013, 2014, and predicted for 2015. Note that these are averages, so a single month isn't depicted.

Hey, did you READ THE HEADLINE?

“a couple that earns nearly $15,000 a month [after taxes]”

A MONTH. Not a year. A MONTH. They make $15,000 A MONTH. That means they’re netting after taxes $180,000 a year.

“they also spend WAY too much on housing relative to their income.”

Yes, I wonder why they have a mortgage that high. Maybe the house is a real mansion?

$1200/mo for food? As you noted, no line for taxes and and none for any insurance other than life. Perhaps the auto insuranceins is included in the car line

It must be nice. I don’t get much more than that in a year.

The mortgage payment is right in line - just less than 12%

Noticed their escrow is through the roof - over 13000 per year. Their savings are down 1700 per month from 2013, that is a shocker.

Their car payments are actually below the average American.

Number seems absurdly low for car insurance.

They don’t say how many kids they have — they have childcare costs/school costs...

Looks like 2 kids. Notice the UGMA (uniform gift to minor’s act) and 529 contributions.

I was impressed that they seem to be saving appropriately.

I beg to differ. They aren't saving eternally at all. Their Charitable Contributions total $0.00. And that's on annual gross income approaching $300,000 (the figures quoted in the article were after-tax).

19 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also...24 No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money...33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." (Matthew 6)

and

Jesus looked at him and loved him. "One thing you lack," he said. "Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." (Mark 10:21)

and

This world is not my home
I'm just a-passin' through
My treasures are laid up
Somewhere beyond the blue
The angels beckon me
From heaven's open door
And I can't feel at home
In this world any more!

What are you talking about? Nearly half of their income was spent on charity.

Pardon me? Are you making some sophomoric joke about their taxes, or do you have an actual point?

You appear to be a very selfish person. Why do you believe that others should hand over even more of their hard earned money?

I'm selfish, because I give away my money? Aren't you contradicting yourself?

God clearly prompts me to donate, above and beyond my onerous tax burden, in two ways: through Scripture, and by His Holy Spirit. So, what you're really asking is: Why does God ask that of His children? Only His children know the answer from direct experience. We are to deny ourselves, pick up our cross daily, and follow Him. He demands nothing less than all of us, including our finances. And He promises eternal blessing in return.

There's an old (nonscriptural) question that applies to this couple: by looking at your life, is there enough evidence to convict you of being a believer? Their budget shows no such evidence. They're living only for this world, serving Money and not God. I'm praying for them that, having willingly if unwittingly revealed that about themselves, God is able ultimately to get through to one or both of them.

No, you are selfish because you are piously looking for others to give away theirs. What you need to do is mind your own business.
