Conviction upheld over contributions to Sen. Harry Reid

A federal appeals court on Monday upheld the conviction of a former Nevada lobbyist accused of making illegal campaign contributions to Sen. Harry Reid's 2010 reelection campaign.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected F. Harvey Whittemore's contention that the evidence presented at trial was insufficient to convict him.

Prosecutors say Whittemore promised to raise money for Reid in 2007 and distributed $145,000 to 17 relatives and employees, each of whom then made the maximum contribution of $4,600 to Reid's campaign and kept $400.

Roger that. When (fat chance) he’s convicted it’ll be cause for celebration.

Why is Reid allowed to get away with this? This is far more serious than what Dinesh D’Souza did and he is basically doing time.

So is this an Edwin Edwards case of, “It was illegal for them to bribe me, not for me to accept it”?

Not bribery: illegal campaign contributions.
Ironic to see Dimocrats, the authors of campaign finance limits, hoist on their own petards, but still: Why again are there limits on campaign contributions, when it has previously been held that contributing to a political campaign is protected free speech?

I mean, either we’re for free speech, or we’re not. Are we no better than the Dims?

Its a stupid law. Stupid part of a stupid law. It would be legal if the employees gave the money and then got an unrelated bonus a few weeks later, but illegal if they get the bonus as a quid pro quo in advance. It is illegal for the giver but not the recipient and of course everyone knows this goes on. there should be no caps. Freedom of association includes freedom to give your money to whomever you want. Its made more imbecilic by the logic that its illegal to give too much to a candidate but you can give unlimited amounts to his/her political party. All designed to give power to the parties - more power to the 2 parties, to corporations and less to the politicians, less to the people.

I don’t have a crystal ball but I can’t help but think that ole Harry’s concern over getting exposed through this criminal proceeding compelled him to try to wield his egotistically power so he threatened the wrong people if they don’t cover for him. Whoever he threatened had something directly to do with him getting his ass kicked a couple of weeks ago. Now ole Harry, his family members and staff who were involved all need to be criminally indicted. We’ll see.

Hah ha, the stinkin’ little crook probably told that lobbiest not to worry about it. Reid probably told him he woulkd see to it that he won his appeal!

Then the little puny Reid lost his power and the people he was going to lean on to help his lobby buddy told him to take a hike. We ain’t getting in any trouble over a freaking has been.

Explains why Harry had the beejezzus beat outta him.

LOL
