A double dose of snow makes its way toward NYC Driver miraculously survives pileup between two big rigs Motorists angry over alternative-side parking rules during snowfall New York braced for one of the biggest blizzards in “the city’s history,” with over 24 inches of snow expected to blanket Gotham on Monday and Tuesday, authorities said.

“We are facing one of the largest storms in the city’s history,” Mayor de Blasio said. “This could be a storm…the likes of which we have never seen before.”

Snow is expected to begin falling just before sunrise on Monday before the serious blizzard kicks in late in the afternoon and through Tuesday morning’s rush, forecasters said.

Garbage and recycling will be suspended Monday and Tuesday so New York’s Strongest can put full efforts into clearing up to 36 inches of snow.

I suspect New York’s Strongest is the name assumed by the garbage truck driver’s who put plows on their garbage trucks to clear the streets. The word “strongest” may refer to the odor around those garbage trucks.

Obviously a result of man-made global warming.

The Mayor will be helping out by using a city-owned helicopter to travel between cocktail parties.

I don't know if you've ever been to NYC but I get there regularly.I can assure you that 6 inches of snow ties the city up for days. Two feet will be far uglier.Buffalo's accustomed to this kind of thing...but not Gotham.

Storm of the Century 1996
I happened to be in Delaware during this storm. Was suppose to go to Manhattan during this weekend and boom!

Got snowed in.

Because of how cars were situated I was digging 3 feet of snow away from the car, so when the roads became passable I could leave.

I think I ended up there and extra week.

Dumping more than 20 inches of snow in Central Park, the blizzard of Jan. 7-8, 1996, marked the second biggest snowstorm in New York City history. With winds gusting to more than 50 miles an hour, the powerful nor’easter caused widespread power outages, scores of fatalities and $1 billion in damages from Washington, D.C. to Boston.

Thousands of travelers were stranded at City airports, bus terminals, and highway rest stops as transportation ground to a halt. On Jan. 8, New York City public and parochial schools were ordered closed, several Broadway shows canceled performances, and the New York Stock Exchange had a short day.

Dozens of deaths were attributed to the storm, including a Connecticut man and two New Jersey men who suffered heart attacks while shoveling snow.

As 26,528 tons of salt was spread on City roads, snow was hauled to designated vacant lots and parking areas or dumped into the East and Hudson Rivers. By the end of the 1995-1996 winter season, New York City had experienced 16 snowstorms and recorded more than 89 inches of snow.

As in the good ol’ USSR days, the communist governments always blamed the weather or the international situation for their failings.

NWS for SE NY state:
“SNOWFALL AMOUNTS PREDICTED ARE STAGGERING...WITH 20 TO 30 INCHES OF ACCUMULATION EXPECTED IN MOST AREAS...AND LOCALLY HIGHER WHERE THE HEAVIEST SNOW BANDS SET UP. ON TOP OF THAT...DRIFTS ARE LIKELY TO EXCEED SIX FEET OR MORE.

AGAIN...THIS IS A LIFE THREATENING WEATHER SITUATION...AND WILL IMPACT MILLIONS IN THE LOCAL REGION.”

Refers to NYC’s sanitation workers. Approx 10,000. The term strongest is used as a descriptive of the average worker’s lifting 8 tons of refuse into the truck each shift.

We will either get 4 feet or 4 inches. The forecasts are almost always wrong. I’ll let you know.

Exactly! There’s nowhere to plow the snow to! Where do you put it? On the sidewalks?
