Exit polls suggest a historic victory for the anti-austerity Syriza party in Greece's general election.

The polls indicate that Syriza took between 36% and 38% of the total vote, with the ruling New Democracy party a distant second with 26%-28%.

It is unclear whether Syriza has enough votes to govern the country alone.

When I think of Greece, I am reminded of Leonardo DiCaprio towards the end of the film Titanic...when he sinks to to bottom of the Atlantic. Greece is sinking, and they are doing it to themselves. The EU needs to cut them loose.

It will be interesting to see with whom Syriza forms a coalition government. This could turn out to be the first of the European House of Cards to fall. It’s hell when the lazy run out of other folks’ money.

To loosely borrow from The Tragically Hip

Greece is sinking man, and I don’t wanna swim.

If the exit polls are right they will have an absolute majority and won’t need to form a coalition government.

The Greeks have chosen to end Greece. Socialists will destroy the country-it’s already pretty far gone.

A sad example of what happens to a country where taxes are collected poorly, and in general the population evades as much as possible.

The problem for the Germans is that if they went alone, the Mark would do what the Swiss franc just did, and their exports would collapse. They need Greece and the other weak countries pulling down the Euro so that they can keep their export markets.

“The Greeks have chosen to end Greece. Socialists will destroy the country-it’s already pretty far gone.

The Greeks have realized that Brussels and Germany do not have the best interests of Greece in mind. Austerity has devastated their country.

While the party that won may not be capable of governing, the major parties that lost have already proven they are incapable of governing.

The Greeks could watch the slow demise of Greece, or take a chance. The only pathway out now is to exit the EU, renounce their sovereign debt and restructure their laws and economy. No matter what they do, they will have a tough go of it.

If they leave, they will only be the first nation of several that end up leaving.

We watch from afar as the Sovereign Debt Crisis hits Europe. Money will flow here to escape, pushing up our own dollar... until it no longer does. Then America will face the consequences for her own debt and failure to restructure.

Starting in October, this will turn ugly.

One policy to institute at the start: a flat income tax of say 20% that will be collected on all incomes regardless of source and that spending will be limited to the revenue obtained. Put a stop to tax evasion and control spending.

Does anyone know if there was a time since 1960 that Greece had a sustained period of economic growth?

You do know Syriza is the radical left ?

More likely 95% top marginal tax rates and nationalizations.

“Austerity has devastated their country.”
That is just a consequence of decades of living high on the hog. And correct me, if I am wrong, but I got the impression from your post that you think that the Greek commies may be the first in history that will be capable of governing. That hope and change works miracles...

To put it in other words, before 01/25/2015 Greece was standing at the edge of the abyss. After 01/25/2015 the country made a great step forward.

Larry Kudlow once said that Greece peaked in 350 BC. I think he was right.

No surprise that the "party of free stuff" carried the election. How to pay for social programs? Eh, worry about that later.

Agreed! Just like we’re doing!

No. They have never held the reigns and we know what will happen. That the Greeks chose them says more about the failure of the “mainstream” parties. Like ours!
