Iraqi forces have regained just 270 of the 21,000 square miles controlled by Islamic State in six months, the Pentagon has said.

Efforts to train Iraqi troops and moderate Syrian rebels are moving forward, the US claimed - but so far less than 2% of militant territory has been regained.

Most of this has been taken by Kurdish forces in the north.

Rear Admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon's press secretary, said control of land would continually change over time.

He added that it would be a long struggle.

That relegates the effort to the same classification as GloBull warming - the damage happens quickly, but sometimes we must wait decades to be able to see it. Even though we cannot see the real progress being made when we exert our efforts/control to correct it, if we just wait some more decades, we will maybe see some results.

Great shades of Kerry - it's all so new-antzed that none of it makes sense.

How is it possible that 50,000 JV terrorists can hold over 200,000 square miles of land stretching over two countries?

We should be able to drop enough forces into Iraq under the radar and decimate them. Position forces, open up a corridor for the enemy to escape and at the end of the corridor are a couple of hungry spooky’s.

implicit in the article is the thought that there is a desire to restore Iraq, and by extension Syria, to the old borders.

There is no such desire. Iraq was

the current efforts are to gain control of the new borders and insure certain populated centers are not under ISIL control

the current effort is mostly about securing the new kurdish national borders
