Iowa ethanol lobby starts 2016 campaign to regain influence

Renewable-fuels advocates are promising to spend millions putting ethanol back in the debate for Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucus next year as cheap oil and setbacks in biofuels policy make the additive less central to voters.

Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, backed by state corn-grower and renewable-fuels associations and the Washington-based biofuels lobby Growth Energy, on Thursday formed America’s Renewable Future, to make the Renewable Fuels Standard an issue in the 2016 race. The Iowa caucus is set for early January.

“We are designing it to look like a presidential campaign, but the RFS is our candidate,” said Eric Branstad, the governor’s son and a group organizer. “We’re going to be talking to people” and making the presidential candidates respond, he said on a conference call.

I’m so tired of having to treat gas, use gas that’s getting old, etc. Ethanol gas is entirely a program to give crony farmer companies tax money. I’d love for a class action suit against the responsible parties for all those ruined small engines.

By all means make RFS an issue. I would like to know candidate’s position. Regardless of their stand on anything else I will vote against anyone in favor of rurning food into fuel.

This is exactly why Iowa shouldn’t be allowed to be the 1st state to have a caucus/primary every four years. It is important for all the candidates to do well early. Otherwise, they’re out of the race.

Why should the people of Iowa (and their political cronies) have more clout and more say in our process than those in other states?

The candidates that are left after Iowa and NH are the ones that have promised to fund all of their pork projects. I don’t like it one bit.

People all over the world are starving and we want to turn food into gas? I just don’t get it at this time when oil is plentiful. I do believe in bio fuels and think continued research is warranted, but forced use of ethanol is not required at this time. Engines are just not ready for ethanol. I spend a good portion of my time in a farming environment where locals gladly pay extra for non-ethanol gas to preserve their equipment. Another case in point is the voiding of car warranties where ethanol content was increased. America is blessed with a good farming climate and technology. Export corn at a fair trade price and I doubt we’d see lobbies pushing for more ethanol in our gas.

turning food into fuel

As fuel it poisons your car's engine. It's also turned into HFCS, which poisons the body.

It's more than bizarre, when you think about it. The US is using its agricultural abundance to poison our bodies and machines. There must be a better use for what starts out as a nutritional food.

Sooner or later this electorate is going to experience projectile vomiting over crony capitalism. Woe be to any of these types who find themselves on the wrong side of it.

BUMP!

Last Saturday I spent about 2 hours trying to tune the carb on my Simplicity snow blower. Finally, I said screw it. So I dropped it off at my local small engine repair guy on Monday morning. He spent about a half hour cleaning the carb and stated: you need to replace the entire carb. It will cost $175 for the part. A rebuild kit for $35 will not fix all of the problems. This is an old machine. It is not worth replacing.

I am a pretty good small engine mechanic. I ALWAYS put Startron gas treatment in my fuel. I keep only 1-2 gallons at a time so that it does not age. I keep my fuel in the garage where it stays warmer. I drain my machines and run them dry when they are going to sit for more than a few weeks. Yet, this is third time I have had to replace or rebuild a carburetor on one of my small engines.

FYI, the mechanic said now what they recommend for long term storage is to run the machine out of the ethanol added gasoline. Then put jet fuel(NON ETHENOL)in the machine and run it for 10-15 minutes to make sure all the ethanol gasoline blend is run through the machine. Then turn it off and let it sit with the jet fuel in it for long term storage. This is the only way to not screw up the jets or fuel lines.

We should cancel every single penny for ethanol subsidies, and hand the cash over to subsidize the shale oil industry, to deflect the Saudi attempt at destruction. This is about freeing ourselves from the camel jockeys once and for all.

Agreed. It would be easier all the way around if they got rid of the ethanol and just paid the corn lobby a 10% royalty on every gallon of gas. Of course "royalty" is not the best word here. "Protection money" (mafia sense) works better.

To the extent that ethanol politics pollutes the Iowa caucus process, the results should be dismissed. Actually, no state where such a narrow, crony capitalist issue exists should be the first presidential primary results.

They did away with the tax credit subsidy for ethanol blended into gasoline, but kept the mandate for the required amount.

NO!!!

Do not look to the federal government to "help" industry. No special selection of winners and losers.

Small engine repairmen all over the country will have to cancel their vacation plans if forced Ethanol is done away with.

Why can’t they just put all that ethanol into hard liquor, where it’s really needed!?

Especially during this preezidency.

Have you tried getting your gasoline from this source?

http://pure-gas.org/

I use it for my small engines and sometimes in my truck.
