Tennessee GOP may seek closed primaries

Former Unicoi County sheriff and current Tennessee Republican Party Executive Committeeman Kent Harris is among members of his committee who feel Democrats should vote for Democrats and Republicans should vote for Republicans.

The Tennessee Republican Party Executive Committee is scheduled to meet in a special-called session on Feb. 7 in Nashville to consider what has been referred to as the “closed primary resolution.” If the committee approves the resolution, it would essentially be recommending that the Tennessee General Assembly enact legislation to require voters to register with their respective party before casting ballots in primary elections.

The only reason for open primaries is that various states require them if state resources are used. But why does a political party require the state’s assistance in determining its candidates for office? The GOP should just refuse state-held primary elections and do their own polling of their members privately. It wouldn’t be any more expensive than the direct-mail fundraising campaigns and would probably even serve that purpose too.

Believe it or not there is a loony USSC decision that says it is legal to have cross over primaries. Political Parties should be viewed as the private clubs they are and therefore be immune from such government interference.

Good for them.

Every state which has a governing Republican party needs to overhaul the primary rules.

The only reason to vote in the other party’s primary is TO SCREW THEM UP!!!

Something I have done often. Sometimes, I just want to send them a message.

Also, a runoff between top two if no candidate gets 50%+1 of the total vote by party.

Here’s some better ideas:

- Hold voting on the same day, across the board....local, State, Fed, primary, general.
- NO mail-in (excluding military), proxy, or absentee
- IDs required and finger in ink
- Purge voting rolls every other year, re-enrolled IN PERSON

Won’t matter if they’re open, or not. You can’t bother to vote/register, you shouldn’t be griping.

I’m with that: NO EARLY VOTING!

You need to show up at your local precinct polling place, where a witness can say, “Hey, that guy doesn’t live around here anymore!”

The craziest system I ever heard of, though, is the one they have in Louisiana: must be a holdover from the Napoleonic Code or something

We need runoffs as well. However, Ramsey placed 3rd in the 2010 primary for Governor (so had there been a runoff, it would’ve been between RINO lib Haslam and RINO primadonna Zach Wamp).

In Memphis and Nashville you’d have to purge yearly. Our dead vote. Nursing home residents with severe Alzheimer, jail inmates all vote never leaving their facility. Dems go in and gather votes, they also are in the Pulpit. Which is ILLEGAL.

I always early vote, because you don’t know what life hands you. My late husband is a good example. We voted early for GWB, and election day I was burying him from a massive heart attack.

I have 2 very sick younger siblings to factor in.

TN at least requires a photo ID. And if you can’t afford 1, they will provide a NON DL photo ID. Some of that could be solved by putting photos on Medicare cards, and SS cards, change them every 5 yrs and go to plastic with security strips built in.

Thanks for putting a name to the third party, wamp was not in my memory bank he was a no body to me. And we had hashed out that he was not a good candidate on the TN profile page. We knew halsam was a RICH RINO.

Got no problem w/ every year even. Hell, tie it to the b-day like they do w/ tags here in FL.

Unfortunately, I’m going to have to disagree w/ the early voting: ‘just because’ is not a reason to open the process to lawlessness.

I did note there should be a ‘vote by proxy’ (living will’ish??); but even then, again, it’s open for abuse (see nursing homes, etc.). Plus, saying you voted for GWB isn’t a ‘plus’ ;) (Mr. ‘passionate conservatism’)

GWB was the lesser of 2 evils, I sure was not going to vote or let Prince Albert in the WH, which seems all we ever get anymore. Had to put up with the nut case as my senator.

TN lets people over 65 not put photo ID on their DL’s. Which is dumb. So what if you are old looking, that is life. Want a good photo, go to the beauty shop or barbers before you go for your DL photo it’s what I do.

They could do them all in 1 session when you renew your DL. They use the same photo on my CCW permit as on my DL. Same could be used on Medicare cards or SS cards.

Hell, I’m all for testing those over 65 every other year for DRIVING! There’s a reason I don’t go NEAR S. Florida /s

Yep, they COULD do it...but won’t. Nothing that makes sense, nor saves taxpayer $$, will ever get the nod from those in the ‘seats of power’
