Tennessee GOP may seek closed primaries

Former Unicoi County sheriff and current Tennessee Republican Party Executive Committeeman Kent Harris is among members of his committee who feel Democrats should vote for Democrats and Republicans should vote for Republicans.

The Tennessee Republican Party Executive Committee is scheduled to meet in a special-called session on Feb. 7 in Nashville to consider what has been referred to as the “closed primary resolution.” If the committee approves the resolution, it would essentially be recommending that the Tennessee General Assembly enact legislation to require voters to register with their respective party before casting ballots in primary elections.

Is there some crazy ‘reason’ why this isn’t universal???

The only reason to vote in the other party’s primary is TO SCREW THEM UP!!!

Nveer understood why we allow liberaltarians and Dems to vote in our primaries. The we have them strating up north too where mostly those who would say moderates are more to the left than some Midwestern and southern Dems

Good. Then maybe we’ll finally get some decent senators and governor. Neither Alexander nor Corker would have likely survived closed primaries to start with.

I’ve met Sheriff Harris...he’s a good man. Many a good conservative candidate have fallen by the wayside thanks to the corrupted primary system. Time for a change.

I wish Missouri would go with closed primaries as well. The Democrats have messed with our candidate selection too many times, the last being Todd Akin.

Isn’t SC, with its crucial early primary, an open primary, allowing Democrats to influence the Republican nomination? Open primaries are ridiculous.

All states should have closed primaries...why should the Dems nominate our candidate?

If this goes through ... it’s finally RINO season in Tennessee.

Yup. Every single GOP primary should be closed. It’s a no brainer.

I would go beyond that and insist on caucuses. I like the idea of the truly interested being the ones who select the nominee.

Also, we have a problem with the blue states being winner take all, and many of the red states being proportional distribution of delegates.

IOW, the blue states have a larger voice in selecting the candidate than do the red states.

There are a LOT of Conservative Libertarians
in the Republican Party,
and Reagan welcomed them...

Dems can stay in their own sewer.

What we need is a way to force a losing conservative out in the primaries. Because every time 2 conservatives run against a RINO, the RINO wins, as the losing in the polls in single digits, conservative will not back down and let the leader win. It pulls just enough votes away from the lead conservative for the RINO to win. It is how we got corker and halsam. Lt Gov Ron Ramsey should have been governor. Except the conservative who no one remembers would not back out.

Plus no cross over voting.

Sounds like some heavy lifting is needed.

I really wish NH would make this change back. This same day registration is electing too many liberals/middle of the road candidates.

I agree there are some conservative liberaltarians , however when it comes to social issues like marriage, border, overseas policy, drugs, then they are more left of most liberals I have met or talked to.

Anyway libertarians have their own party, their own platform, conventions and, their own nomination process
