Yemen's US-Backed President Quits; Country Could Split Apart
ABC News ^ | January 22, 2015 | By AHMED AL-HAJ and MAGGIE MICHAEL

Yemen's U.S.-backed president quit Thursday under pressure from rebels holding him captive in his home, severely complicating American efforts to combat al-Qaida's powerful local franchise and raising fears that the Arab world's poorest country will fracture into mini-states.

Presidential officials said Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi submitted his resignation to parliament rather than make further concessions to Shiite rebels, known as Houthis, who control the capital and are widely believed to be backed by Iran.

Concerns were also mounting about an economic collapse. Two-thirds of Yemen's population are already in need of humanitarian aid, according to reported U.N. figures. Iran's regional rival Saudi Arabia, which has long been Yemen's economic lifeline, cut most of its financial aid to Yemen after the Houthis seized the capital in September. The Houthis deny receiving any Iranian support.

In Washington on Thursday, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the U.S. was still trying to sort out what was happening on the ground and had made no decisions yet regarding embassy staffing.

If I read the news correctly, Shiites managed to depose the president. They will want to ally with Iran.
But Yemen is over 60% Sunni so it is likely to degenerate into civil war (more so than they are now...), possibly with ISIS joining it.

Saudi King dead, 0bama openly supporting ISIS, things are getting interesting.

Starting to believe passing a multi month crombuls may have been a good idea (??). Provides economic stability if 0bama is charged with treason

I once read a book about the KGB. One agent was assigned to Yemen. I can’t remember if it was North or South Yemen but among the Russian spies it was considered to be the worst assignment in the world.

Yemen seems to be sort of ground zero for Islamic militants.

The Queen of Sheba was from South Yemen and I have read that once it was a beautiful, prosperous country. That was probably pre Muhammad.

The current situation is just a result of the ill conceived idea of uniting the two Yemens.

The Marib Dam was the source of water that allowed the Sabean civilization to exist. It was built ~1700BC and stood until ~570AD. The culture there has been in decline ever since.

Iran is losing it’s grip, but now that Abdullah is dead things may get a bit interesting.

Israel may even strike now that a bit of confusion abounds in the region.

There was a long running civil war in Yemen before the North and South unified. Basically it was a proxy war between the Saudis and Nasserite Egyptians. I suppose this time it will be the Saudis and Iranians.

Really a shame. There is a pretty amazing archeological site out in the sticks, Marib and Marib Dam. It was the capital of a lost ancient civilization that collected water for their canals behind a big dam.

I saw a show on it a few years ago and they went out there with security. Now, you couldn't go with security.
