The Megyn Kelly Moment
NY Times Magazine ^ | 1/21/2015 | Jim Rutenberg

Posted on 01/21/2015 9:06:45 PM PST by iowamark

On a gray Wednesday in November, the Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly and four producers gathered around a conference table on the 17th floor of the News Corporation building in Manhattan...

Slated for the D block was Jonathan Gilliam, a former Navy SEAL...

For those unfamiliar with the phenomenon, a Megyn moment, as I have taken to calling it, is when you, a Fox guest — maybe a regular guest or even an official contributor — are pursuing a line of argument that seems perfectly congruent with the Fox worldview, only to have Kelly seize on some part of it and call it out as nonsense, maybe even turn it back on you. You don’t always know when, how or even if the Megyn moment will happen; Kelly’s political sensibility and choice of subjects are generally in keeping with that of the network at large. But you always have to be ready for it, no matter who you are. Neither Karl Rove nor Dick Cheney have been spared their Megyn moments, nor will the growing field of 2016 presidential aspirants, who can look forward to two years of interrogation on “The Kelly File.” The Megyn moment has upended the popular notion of how a Fox News star is supposed to behave, and led to the spectacle of a Fox anchor winning praise from the very elites whose disdain Fox has always welcomed. In the process, Kelly’s program has not just given America’s top-rated news channel its biggest new hit in 13 years; it has demonstrated an appeal to the younger and (slightly) more ideologically diverse demographic Fox needs as it seeks to claim even more territory on the American journo-political landscape.

Thanks for the link! What I got from that video is that she went after a Republican as she would a Democrat! Am I wrong in that understanding?

That justifies my opinion that she goes after all parties regardless of party. So, not sure why you said what you did earlier or maybe I’m confused about earlier statements.

At any rate, thanks for the link...

What you should get from the link is that she's a lawyer before being either a Republican or Democrat. As a lawyer, she regards gay marriage as a matter of equity between two individuals, without consideration for its effect on children as a matter of equity. Lawyers are relatively incapable of dealing with issues beyond two parties or interests, not so much due to intellect as to the seeing the world through the adversarial lens.

Funny...

Looking at the other Participants posts, in response should tell you some of us are not fooled, but hey, who’s really dog piling here, right???

It’s not really the “amount” of issues she trends to the left, playing this “knowledgeable” host/entertainer...

I mean, yeah, you are smitten by her looks, and sometimes she comes across as conservative sounding...So your analysis is based upon how well you’ve been pulled into that tent by those surface things...

I’m not telling you, you are wrong about anything, it’s just so funny how people get so blinded by a person’s present personification, and lose that same persons history (past) in that rapture...

She does a very good job of masking her liberal past and current tendencies...She may not be a flaming liberal, but she does bend that way, and it slips out every now and then, not on just a few issues either...

But if that’s yer “gal”, okay...

I have learned over years that there is NO ONE in the media today that is more conservative than I am, and I do not need anyone to tell me anything other than facts and figures, to help me continue to separate the wheat from the chaff in the narratives that pass for news these days, from what ever source, or person trying to steer my opinion one way or another...

Megan Kelly is a prime example of the opinion I have developed over the years...

I didn't say anything related to you or your posts other than to see your request of Georgia Girl 2 and provide the link out of my own curiosity for what Newt had to say.

That was country singer, Toby Keith.

Last I heard she supported homo marriage. Is that incorrect? Because it’s not possible to be anything but a liberal if that’s in your belief structure.

Unless someone rewrote the core of conservative belief while I was in the bathroom.

Right! She is a lawyer going after the truth, not her opinion! You should understand that! She is stating the law as it currently stands..not her opinion!

That alone should make you proud of her instead of trying to take her personnel opinion into consideration. You should be proud of her for standing up for the law (current) regardless of her personal opinion! I disagree with the law and hate her position, but why do you hate her for standing up for the law?

Why does that not matter to you? She is so much more honest about the law and opinions that almost everybody else and actually say so!

Which has nothing to do with anything. You support gay marriage, you are a lib. It’s that simple.

Why do I get the impression you’re just a disrespectful person after disrespecting me in you first response to me, ms 1998. Your second post was just more of the same as in I must meet your standards. I don’t have to fit your expectations. Many of us see how some of you “old timers” roll. Of course, this is the response you were expecting I’m sure. Typical elitist, sounds a lot like some liberals I know.

Sorry, I disrespected you in 1998? Please inform me? Have you been holding a grudge against me all of this time?

If so, I’m truly sorry but really don’t know what I said to provoke your anger?

While I understand your comments, there is a lot more that makes up a Conservative than just gay marriage. I hope that you can put this aside and look at other characteristics of those running of office.

I agree with you in principle but will not make it my primary issue when voting as it would e useless, ie, no one to vote for...

Yes, Newt can bring it to them when he wants to. I remember watching him leave David Gregory sitting there with his mouth hanging open, priceless.

I’m really surprised by the animosity toward Megyn Kelly here as she seems to be an honest and conservative reporter.

Maybe there are too many folks here who take single issues to heart and disparage lawyers who uphold the law. Maybe some of you just hate all journalists, at least that I can understand.

Unfortunately, way too many here seem to think that any belief beyond their own is out of bounds and beyond reproach. That is a shame because that is the same thing that the leftists believe. Man Rules.

You really have to finally get down to the law (current) and if you don’t believe in that, then we are eventually lost! We can all disagree with homosexual marriage, and other things, but if we can’t agree with the results of the Supreme Court, then we have lost our own Democracy!

Before getting to the media -

Kelly practiced law as a corporate litigator at Jones Day for nine years and was an associate in the Chicago office of the law firm Bickel & Brewer LLP.>>>”

Missed your comment earlier but agree a bit. She probably had to do that for lawful purposes and understand that. I think that all of Europe understand the no-go zones. I am absolutely sure that the European police do!
