At Microsoft’s Windows 10 event today, the company shared that all Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 users will be able to upgrade to Windows 10, for free.

Microsoft said that the free upgrade will be valid for the first year immediately after the release. Those on Windows Phone 8.1 will also get the update.

Terry Myerson, VP of Windows at Microsoft said that the company wanted to make it a “seamless upgrade” for those users when Windows 10 is released.

Free for one year - during the live-alpha phase.

Exactly why I bought an extra copy of Windows 7 before they disappear. Win 7 is fine for me and I don’t want upgrades that will probably just screw things up.

Makes me very suspicious. What is it in '10' that they want to make sure everyone has on their phone, tablet, laptop or desktop? This is not like them to give away $$............................

Supposedly, they skipped "9" to avoid confusion with "95" and "98" ...

I have installed the Windows (10) Technical Preview on a couple of computers; I'm quite impressed with it as a logical evolution of Windows 7. I'll probably jump in fairly early, as I have delayed purchases on account of Windows 8 being something I don't much like.

Someone must have made a mistake and told them the odd-numbered releases sucked.

So can I download it free... and not install it until there’s at least a 10.1 or 10.2? Even if that takes another year?

This is a smart way for them to clear the decks. More importantly, it will get businesses (who will pay over time) on board.

I think this is great news, as I have machines that run 8 & 8.1, and like both operating systems. I’ve also been using the Windows 10 tech preview, which has worked very well.

Your mileage may vary. Void where prohibited. For external use only. Do not use on unexplained calf pain.

9 was skipped because there were concerns that some software could confuse it with Windows 95 or 98.

What have you found to be improvements over 7, assuming you were using that?

Download the "Technical Preview" and give it a try. It's just that ... I had issues with hardware drivers (Nvidia card, for example) not wanting to install ... but you still get the idea.

Also, by skipping ‘9’, they could avoid the inevitable ‘9.11’ version..................
