Hartford state rep. apologizes for parking in handicapped space

A state representative from Hartford is taking some heat for parking in a handicapped space.

An iWitness snapped a photo of the personal car driven by Rep. Brandon McGee with his state-issued license plate parked in the spot at a Dunkin' Donuts on Capitol Avenue, across the street from the State Capitol.

The picture was taken Friday.

McGee said he issued an apology on his Facebook page.

"Thank you for holding me accountable. The other day (Friday to be exact) I made my usual run to D&D and was in a hurry... parked in a handicap parking space... Major no-no. So for the record, I respect the disabled and people in general. What I should have don was NOT park in a handicap parking space."

He said he was inside of the Dunkin' Donuts for three minutes while picking up something to eat, after not eating anything all day. However he said that is not an excuse.

"As an elected official (I) shouldn't be doing it, so I was wrong," McGee said.

People parking in handicapped spots when they are not allowed to is a problem many at the Capitol Avenue Dunkin' Donuts said they have seen before.

"We oversee many of the state agencies that deal with all types of social services which makes me even more embarrassed that I would do such a thing," he said.

McGee is the assistant majority leader and serves the 5th Assembly District of Windsor and Hartford. According to his website, he recently took the oath of office for his second term Jan. 7. He was also recently appointed as vice chair of the Human Services Committee.

Big sign right in front of him saying it’s a handicap parking spot. If he can’t see that he’s has no business driving!

If he were a Republican they’d be sending out press releases talking about how he hates the disabled

It’s more than just being a Democrat.

He is of a special, protected and privileged class.

The special privileged class that get to park their cars right in front of a Walmart entrance while a passenger, or even the driver, strolls in to make a purchase.

I have a temporary placard (it’s red and good for six months) and couldn’t find any place at Walmart in Peachtree City, GA the other day. Walmart has a LOT of handicapped spaces too. So when I’m hobbling in, I take a look, and I call and report two vehicles with no placard hanging, or showing, and no tag designation. I hope they got tickets. grrrrrr

Traffic tickets became confiscatory within the past decade. Things that once were $85-120 fines are now $300-1000.

Of course if you skate by without paying (risking an arrest warrant), you may be able to bundle all of the exorbitant fines together and pay a reduced fine of $150 in court. I've sat in traffic court (for non-traffic offenses) and seen it happen.

I see vehicles swing into handicapped places all the time, and some spry looking 40- or 50-something hop out and go strolling into the store like Jack LaLane.

Handicapped parking spaces is just another liberal nanny-state scam.

I just found out from my nurse that any veteran rated at or over 50% disabled can just walk into the Texas DMV with proof, an application and $3 and leave with a disabled veteran license plate which also serves as a handicapped parking permit. I assumed one had to be 100%.

My Ex wife had ankle surgery, and has one of those. I’ve been running errands for her, since she doesn’t get around too well, but instead of my ‘97 Honda, I use her ‘11 BMW. My pal asked me why I didn’t park in the spots, since I had the placard. “Bad juju” was my reply !

My sister-in-law has a handicapped plate and despite being a hypochondriac... her only real problem is that she is too fat. I think that her plate really ought to require her to park in the back of any lot she parks at; she could use the exercise.

Most old people around here don’t seem to have handicapped plates or stickers and you see them hobbling up from the back of the parking lot with their walkers and canes while the fatties in the handicapped spots are getting out of their 4WD trucks with lift kits.

Exactly! I forgot about the fatness issue. I do see morbidly obese people using the handicapped spots, with placards.

The other thing I love is how they get those electric carts. What fun they have with those in the crowded aisles.
