Sowell: Early Presidential Prospects
Creators Syndicate ^ | Janusary 20, 2016 | Thomas Sowell

With 2015 just getting under way, the buzz of political activity makes it seem almost as if we are already in the midst of the 2016 presidential campaign.

Among the Democrats, Hillary Clinton is honing her message to appeal to the mindset of the left wing of her party, whose support she will need in her second attempt to get the nomination as the Democrats' presidential candidate in 2016.

The left wing's true believers would of course prefer Senator Elizabeth Warren, who gives them the dogmas of the left pure and straight, uncontaminated by reality. But she says she is not running.

Maybe she thinks the country is not ready to put another rookie Senator in the White House. After the multiple disasters of Barack Obama, at home and abroad, that self-indulgence should not be habit-forming.

We can certainly hope that the country has learned that lesson — and that Republican rookie Senators get eliminated early in the 2016 primaries, so that we can concentrate on people who have had some serious experience running things — and taking responsibility for the consequences — rather than people whose only accomplishments have been in rhetoric and posturing.

The more optimistic among us may hope that the Republicans will nominate somebody who stands for something, rather than the bland leading the bland — the kind of candidates the Republican establishment seems to prefer, even if the voters don't.

If the Republicans do finally decide to nominate somebody who stands for something, and who has a track record of succeeding in achieving what he set out to do, then no one fits that bill better than Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin, who has put an end to government employee unions' racket of draining the taxpayers dry with inflated salaries and extravagant pensions.

Loosely paraphrasing Sowell here:

I hope Ted Cruz gets knocked out of this thing early.

Obama and the Democrats aren't even going to try to help run the United States over the next two years.

All they're going to do is (1) float wedge issues from the bully pulpit, and criticize the GOP for its feckless response to these proposals, (2) obstruct anything constructive, and (3) help our enemies in any way they can.

From deeper in the article:

everyone knows what the Democrats stand for, but even some Republicans in Congress seem to have only a hazy idea of what principles Republicans stand for.

That’s because the only thing most Republicans stand for getting elected.

This coming from the man who shamelessly attacked Ted Cruz for trying to do something to defund Obamacare while leaving the rest of the Government funding attacked.

Given his history on that issue, I wouldn't take this endorsement too seriously.

Yes, it is a nice early endorsement for Walker who is head and shoulders above all other candidates with the exception of Ted Cruz, in my view.

I like Cruz very much, but I would still prefer a governor with a real record of accomplishment. I’m thinking more and more that Walker is the guy we should rally around.

I don’t really trust Walker, he criticized the TEA Party for running primary opponents to McConnell etc

You know I’ve taken a lot of grief for trying to point out the candidates weaknesses here, which I think are important to note and discuss early.

Obviously Sowell doesn’t favor either Cruz or Rand, as both are “rookie Senators” “whose only accomplishments have been in rhetoric and posturing.”.

Ouch.

But meanwhile, as much as I like Scott Walker I wonder about his lack of a college degree, and how much hay the Donk Media Machine will make with that.

I expect many people will say “it doesn’t matter to me” and “he has more sense than lots of people with fancy degrees from Harvard, like Obama and Gore”, and I would agree.

But, as with the issue of Ted Cruz’s wife’s employment at Goldman-Sachs, the question isn’t want committed conservatives think about it, as much as “how bad a weapon is it for the MSM to bludgeon the candidate with?”

I know for sure that the MSM is going to have a long fied day on the Goldman thing. (There are already warm-up articles out there at places like HuffPo. It’s only a matter or the season changing before HuffPo hit pieces become NY Times feature articles, and then, as day follows night, video reports on network and cable news, reports long on insinuation and vilification. (See: Romney, Mitt - POTUS run of 2012 and “vulture funds” meme)

I am less sure about the Walker college degree thing, but it’s something to think about.

Never have Ivy League credentials been so meaningless and accompanied by such incompetence and ignorance as in the presidency of Barack Obama.

Given the Politically Correct Bull Crap everyone is getting indoctrinated with learning in Kolledge maybe 1/2 of America will see it as a badge of honor especially since he didn't go near Harvard or Yale...

He forgot Governor Mike Pence who IMHO is the guy to watch.

After speaking with a Freeper Privately Yesterday I am giving up on Perry.

It is Walker, Pence, and Cruz, anything else is a Yugo with retreaded tires....

I like Larry Sabato's Crystal Ball. He seems to be what so many claim to be but are not: a straight shooter political analyst who isn't trying to push any particular candidate or ideology.

Here's his roundup of the current field for GOP POTUS nomination:

Crystal Ball 2016 GOP Presidential Field

It's slightly depressing to see Jeb alone in the top tier, and the second tier has Romney, Rand, Walker and Christie Creme.

So, Walker is looking better in comparison with the RINO candidates.

I don't quite get why Rand is shown so high here: the conservative grass roots seem much more energized by Cruz. Maybe his money raising is further along, or he's given credit for his fathers political network?
