COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A former substitute teacher who showed a movie featuring graphic sex and violence to a high school class has been convicted of disseminating matter harmful to juveniles.

Sheila Kearns showed the film, "The ABCs of Death," during five periods of a Spanish class at East High School in Columbus in April 2013, prosecutors said. The movie consists of 26 chapters, each depicting some form of grisly death and representing a letter of the alphabet, such as "E is for Exterminate," ''O is for Orgasm" and "T is for Toilet."

A jury convicted Kearns of four felony counts on Thursday.

I think the punishment was too harsh for showing a lousy movie. The PC culture loves it like that. Can’t do anything and get punished.

These things aren't just "lousy" movies. They are extremely violent and graphic, and they serve no useful purpose.

Well, unfortunately, when a school needs a substitute teacher, they have to take what they can get and hope for the best.

The school is about 90% black, hard to find good substitutes. The school gets a rating of 2 out a possible rating of 10 ....

I live in a town with a very large major university (which has a teacher certification program). The local population is educated above the state average. Regardless, our school district cannot get enough substitute teachers. Ever. The district has increased substitute teacher pay. And what substitutes they do get are, generally speaking, pitiful. Generally, they are unemployed people who are unemployed for obvious reasons.

And no one with a brain wants to expose themselves to the horrors of substitute teaching.

Perryman said she talked with Kearns about the movie chapter "L is for Libido," about a sex contest whose winner is killed by a chain saw. "She told me," Perryman said, "'Those kids see worse than that at home.'"

And this was in a Spanish class of all places. Just plain bizarre, although she's right that they can see worse at home.

Probation? Hell, no. The judge in the trial should be petitioned to give her the maximum sentence, *after* undergoing psychiatric examination, to determine if she should be permanently registered as a sex offender.

I remember my high school shop teacher showing us the movie “Roadhouse” completely unedited. No one complained. :)

When you don't know how to teach...show movies

In my adventures, it was amazing that at times I'd be left with PG13 or even raunchier movies to show instead of having lesson plans. I always had some movies with me just in case. Only G, clean cut for grade 6 or less. Nothing raunchier than PG for grade 7 or older. All of them with the precedent of having been shown in other city schools. I had some clean culturally appreciated movies with me at all times.

Don't blame the substitute for this, unless she brought the movie and showed that instead of a tamer one which was provided or instead of implementing a lesson plan. But showing a movie? That's TOTALLY on the principal, and shouldn't be allowed unless it's in coordination with a substitute who was left with no plans and no access to material.

This is not an opinion...been there, done that, knew the rules for avoiding this kind of controversy.

Yooo...I substituted for seven years. I'm a retiree and like many who substitute preferred not to be in same job -every day environments or have reasons to not work every day. In many neighborhoods, a school cannot function unless it has an excellent pool of substitutes.

I was proud to be a "travelling substitute". The caliber, backgrounds and skill of my peers was amazing.

Why don't you try substituting in inner city schools and observe what they do, first hand?

That was really cool.

Generally speaking, you don’t have a clue. My obvious otherwise unemployment reason for being a sub was to know exactly what was going on in our kids’ school. Wow, who could possibly imagine someone with a masters would want to set aside a career to raise their kids. What a pitiful no brained scum I am. At least I’m not alone as several FRiends have stooped to such lowly positions. Let us all bow down to those holier than us. All praise, Clara Lou! All hail, Clara Lou!

Foreign movies are a great way to help learn a new language. It’s one thing to learn how to read and write or to translate a slow spoken question in a class setting, its another to listen and translate from a native speaker. She should have chose Pan’s Labrynth, or any number of Spanish language films that are fantastic.
