In Islam, a Long Tradition Against Depicting the Prophet
ABC News ^ | January 14, 2015 | By HAMZA HENDAWI

It's not mentioned in Islam's holy book, the Quran, but the religion's ban on depicting the Prophet Muhammad — even favorably — has run firm through the centuries.

"The Prophet Muhammad enjoys sublime and supreme status among Muslims and it is impossible to let a normal person depict or act the role of the prophet," said Iraqi Shiite cleric Fadhil al-Saadi. "There is no confirmed information about the shape or the features of the Prophet ... So nobody should come up with a painting or an image of him. That would represent an insult to the status of the prophet."

While no one knows Muhammad's true appearance, followers of the relatively modern, ultraconservative Salafi movement in Islam seek to emulate him as closely as possible — including in what they believe to be his physical features and dress. Hardcore Salafis wear a beard without a moustache, let their hair grow long, line their eyes with kohl or wear robes stopping around mid-shin, contending that was the prophet's manner.

The ban also extends to his wives, daughters, sons-in-law, the first caliphs who succeeded him and his closest companions. In fact, Egypt's al-Azhar mosque, the Sunni world's foremost seat of religious learning, has complained when "Mohammed, Messenger of God," an epic 1970s Hollywood production, depicted the prophet's camel.

I don't care what rules these little control freak Muslims have in their home hellholes.

That's their business. But they don't have the right to come here and tell me how I must act. Or how western cartoonist must draw or not draw...

If Muslims don't like freedom of speech - they need to go home. They weren't brought here as slaves. We don't owe them any pity... they have no claim on white guilt. Muslims who don't like our ways need to pack up and leave. Go back to those wonderful Muslim countries that are always at war...with everybody.

It's against MY religion to have crazies murder innocents because they don't genuflect to the demands of some violent pedophile founder... it's NOT MY RELIGION. Here's the deal Muslims - I won't force you to follow MY religion - and YOU won't force me to follow yours. Live and let live. If you can't do that - GO HOME. PACK UP AND LEAVE.

Please - go home IF YOU CAN'T RESPECT OUR WAYS. YOU'RE A GUEST IN OUR COUNTRY.

Mohammed is more revered than even Allah.

Westerners’ original description of Islam as the Mohammedan religion isn’t really too far of the mark.

Muslims insult Christians for worshiping Jesus when they themselves lavish more devotion on Mohammed than on Allah.

Let’s not accuse them of hypocrisy.

Their tradition, not ours. They have no right to murder anyone who doesn’t follow theirs.

Nicely pointed out that it isn't true they don't allow images of Mo. These cartoons don't even specifically id the cartoon figures as anything more than a guy with a turban. Will pictures of turbans now be banned as offensive? Also agree that Muslims are committing idolatry. They elevate this alleged prophet far beyond the place of any mortal. Third, it should be important to us to point out that the real God forbids hatred and violence.

Forbidding images of Mohammed is less restrictive than this:

“Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.”

Of course, in the Christian case, only adherents are conjoined from making images.

These days anyway.

This is an old old cavil; the historical answer is that the graven image means an idol. One of many many reasons that bible study sans context makes no sense.

It does seem an elevation in stature to something more befitting a deity.

I’m waiting for ABC to do a sympathetic piece with the title, “In Christianity, a long tradition against homosexuality.”

I read an article or a post somewhere that said — and I’m probably paraphrasing, but the gist of it was: “If a cartoon is stronger than your god’s #1 guy, it may be time to reconsider your god and his agent.”

islam was, is, and always will be a crime syndicate. Its creator was simply a sand pirate who “went to the well” one too many times, and came down with the DTs and the fevered nightmares attendant thereto.
