Ted Cruz's Plan For NASA Is Epic

Now that the Republicans have taken over Congress, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) will be chairman of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Science, Space, and Competitiveness, which oversees the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Cruz issued a press release on Wednesday outlining his plans for the space agency. In his statement, which was titled "Focus NASA on Its Core Mission: Exploring Space, and More of It," Cruz said he wants to expand the US space program.

"In 1962, President John F. Kennedy laid down a marker for space exploration that inspired a generation of Americans to reach for the stars, recognizing that the race to the heavens was nothing less than a crucial front in the battle between freedom and tyranny," Cruz said.

Cruz, who is widely seen as a potential 2016 presidential candidate, went on to argue that NASA's partnership with Russia on the International Space Station has endangered American space exploration and innovation.

"More than 50 years later, we have lost sight of that clarion call," Cruz's statement said. "Russia’s status as the current gatekeeper of the International Space Station could threaten our capability to explore and learn, stunting our capacity to reach new heights and share innovations with free people everywhere. The United States should work alongside our international partners, but not be dependent on them. We should once again lead the way for the world in space exploration."(continued)

Further evidence that if the Senate leadership wants to marginalize a member who wants to reduce government then the quickest way to do it is give him chairmanship of a committee that spends money.

"We must refocus our investment on the hard sciences, on getting men and women into space, on exploring low-Earth orbit and beyond, and not on political distractions that are extraneous to NASA’s mandate. I am excited to raise these issues in our subcommittee and look forward to producing legislation that confirms our shared commitment to this vital mission."

Why don’t you come out and honestly tell us who your candidate is?

That's just crazy talk.

Everyone knows NASA's main goal is muslim outreach, and look how well it's worked out.

Cruz and Walker are the only two current possibilities that I would bother to vote for.

But I don’t think I’m gonna get the chance (see tag line) and the more time passes the more convinced I am that it is true.

And then JFK told his teenage mistress to give Dave Powers oral sex beside the pool while he watched.

JFK as an inspiration? NASA needs to be wound down. The future of space is private. Cruz has gone native.

Hey Ted, tell NASA to check their dumpsters for the Saturn 5 engine blueprints. Because throwing them away was really rational and excusable and not f*****g TREASON, right?

”In his statement, which was titled "Focus NASA on Its Core Mission: Exploring Space, and More of It [emphasis added]," Cruz said he wants to expand the US space program."

As I mentioned in a related thread, I enjoyed following NASA on TV when I was growing up. But now that I’ve been studying the Constitution and its history I know that Cruz is wrong to trumpet NASA’s core mission as space exploration. (Whatever Cruz was indoctrinated with in Harvard Law School, it certainly wasn’t the federal government’s limited powers as the Founding States had intended for those powers to be understood.)

More specifically, if Cruz really wants to promote NASA he needs to do the following. He must rally Congress to propose a space exploration amendment to the Constitution to the states. And if the states choose to ratify Cruz’s amendment then Congress will actually have the constitutional authority that it needs to tax and spend for space exploration purposes and Cruz will be a hero.

But also note that I will support Cruz for president if that’s who Obama guard dog Fx News nominates as the candidate. (No, that’s not how candidate nominations are supposed to work, but …)

The only problem is that we are worse than broke!! We need to stop foreign aid and move that to claiming space areas as property of the United States if we are paying for it. No more “mankind” crap. The Moon was claimed for MANKIND? You can’t make that up!!. Mankind did not pay a dime!! We paid the entire bill.

The US needs to stay relevant in space exploration, if that means keeping NASA open but focused on it’s core goals (like manned missions) so be it. We can save more money by cutting the cultural and political BS within the agency.

So...what do have to say about this:

"We must refocus our investment on the hard sciences, on getting men and women into space, on exploring low-Earth orbit and beyond, and not on political distractions that are extraneous to NASA’s mandate. I am excited to raise these issues in our subcommittee and look forward to producing legislation that confirms our shared commitment to this vital mission."

While I sorta understand your point; please point out one government agency, committee, anything, that doesn’t spend money.

At least he’s trying to return NASA to its core core mission: space exploration and not Muslim outreach. And having to rely on Russia for rides to space is down right embarrassing.

Now if you don’t think there should be a NASA, fine. But as long as we have one, let’s get them back on mission. SpaceX and Virgin Galactic aren’t quit ready for prime time. They’re working on and I’m all for private enterprise reaching for the stars.
