Tom Hanks Reminisces on Community College: 'Getting A's' and 'Looking at Girls'

Tom Hanks is a big fan of the community college system.

The Oscar winner graduated from high school in Oakland, California, in 1974 and with "lousy SAT scores" and no money for tuition, he enrolled at Chabot College nearby his home.

In an op-ed in the New York Times published today, Hanks, 58, remembers those days where he went to a school that was basically "all free but for the effort and the cost of used textbooks."

Then Hanks brings up President Obama's hope to "make two years of free community college accessible for up to nine million Americans."

"I hope the idea sticks," he added. "High school graduates without the finances for a higher education can postpone taking on big loans and maybe luck into the class that will redefine their life’s work. Many lives will be changed."

Hanks is undoubtedly a fine actor.

And that’s about all.

So, Tom, STFU about anything beyond your very limited abilities.

Do what I did, and WORK YOUR WAY THROUGH IT.

Hanks, shut up, and act.

I liked Community College too. It gave me a second chance to get into a good college since my high school grades were crap.

And I would have never gotten a Master’s degree if it wasn’t for what I was able to do in Community College.

I read Hanks’s article and believe it did make the case that community college is a good place for some people. However, that has nothing to do with Obama’s proposal that community college be FREE.

Hanks + NYSlimes + topic of the day = shilling for Obama’s power play over community colleges.

There must have been some editors meeting with Valerie in which she asked the virtual state media who was going to do what to support THEIR president.

Hanks recalls taking classes he loved (oral interpretation) and classes he dropped (astronomy) "because it was all math."

This sentence explains exactly why we should not send kids to college for free. Like Hanks, they will smoke pot, chase girls and take useless, easy courses like "oral interpretation", whatever the Hell that is.

The real question is why is community college so expensive? Wasn't the goal of community college to have a college that kids could afford? That could sustain itself on low tuition? What this points out is that the cost structure of community college has increased outrageously over the past 20 to 30 years, with most of the money going into professors' and administrators' pockets.

So this bill is really a sop to state employed community college professors and administrators who would not be getting big salary increases without forced taxpayer support.

Hanks has also been quoted as saying that he would vote for Obama again, should he run for a 3rd term.

I would guess that CC expenses have gone up because the government funds all the loans for all higher education. Therefore, the student can “pay” more money for their education and pay the loan back...if they want to do so.

I can see the advantages to Obama’s plan. But it wouldn’t be cheap and nobody is talking about how to fund it. I predict it’ll be one of those State of the Union schemes that goes nowhere.

If Tom Hanks was ‘Looking at Girls’ in college it was only so he could learn to dress and act like one.

When I was young, community college was essentially free.

Since it was free, nobody valued it or took it seriously and teaching standards were a decidedly mixed bag - unprofessionally and mediocrity was the norm but there were a few really outstanding instructors and professional with tons of real world experience that tenured profs in the ivory towers .

Community college is still very highly subsidized to keep it affordable,, but now that people have to pay for their eduction they are much more motivated and take their education much more seriously and teaching standards have made huge gains.

Obama’s “free” community college proposal is more about allowing “his people” to enroll in community college in order to make themselves eligible for government backed student loans that they have no intention of ever repaying and running up a tab of and unrecoverable student loan debt of $20,000 or so on taxpayer expense while the “make good progress” to a community college associate degree in community organizing or gender/ethnic studies.

The NEA , et al, needs to strengthen the VO-Tech classes they killed off and get away from the everyone needs a college degree crap.

I went to CC and took Welding technology and became a pipefitter welder for 15 years. Then I went back to CC and graduated from the Engineering Tech program, that eventually led me to graduate with my Bachelors in Civil Engineering and become a Professional Engineer.

A formal college education wasn’t for me directly out of HS.

Free Community College for the commoners, and of course, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc. for the elite ruling class.

Free community college would probably spell the end for a lot of 2nd and third tier universities in the US. But I think that is the point - the new groupthink will come exclusively from a very small handful of Ivy League universities by government decree...

“Hanks recalls taking classes he loved (oral interpretation) and classes he dropped (astronomy) “because it was all math.””

Community colleges serve as “remedial High School” in the years following the dumbing down of K thru 12. Now one can just see MIT becoming a “remedial Community College”.
