Because Gerald Ford ran the most bumbling, stumbling, inept campaign of all time! Nobody knew who the heck Carter was and figured, “well, what the heck, how much worse could he be.” Within a few months the country had found out how much worse he could be!

I’m afraid that’s true....I remember that election well and thinking the same thing.
I was watching Ronald Reagan’s first inaugural in 1981 and there you see a very worn out, tired, old-looking, and very crestfallen Jimbo Carter on the podium. After hearing what Jimbo said I’m so glad Reagan stomped him big time 489 EV to 49 EV. He deserved it. What a horrible president Jimbo Carter was, and while America made a mistake in 1976, they made up for it by throwing him out of office in humiliating fashion four years later.
My aunt lived in Atlanta when Carter was governor.
When he was elected president she said “Don’t know how he got elected because he never did anything when he was governor.”
Actually the mentally challenged Jimmy may be on to something. Jews are basically safer in France than in Israel for two reasons.
We defeated the Nazis and the French Resistance/people got rid of many of their worst collaborators. Cleaned house, n’est pas, except for the traitorous Communists who often betrayed the non-communist Resistance to the Gestapo.
Secondly, Israel is a nation surrounded by Moslem/Islamic and Arab enemies. So far France hasn’t gotten to this state, though the no-go Moslem communities/towns around Paris is beginning to make Paris look a lot like a besieged Israel.
Am I the only one here who saw Carter, Begin and Sadat sign the peace treaty and come outside to wave to the friendly crowd gathered in front of the White House (the PLO smaller crowd was behind us yellow death to both Sadat and Begin - how “peaceful of them!?
It was nice to see history being made and both Sadat and Mubarak kept their words re coexisting with Israel.
