Irish warned of doomsday sea levels if climate change continues

In a global warming series Eco Eye, experts warned about the catastrophic dangers of climate change, predicting significant coastal damage and the extinction of many plant and animal species.

“Climate change is a reality. It’s here. That’s something as a society we haven’t bought into. It will be a very difficult problem for Dublin, Cork, Galway and Belfast,” said Professor Robert Devoy.

“What is coming down the tracks is a significant warming of the planet. The last time it warmed of this order, 88 per cent of life on earth disappeared.

“I have five grandchildren. Whatever time is left to me it doesn’t matter, but for them at the age of four and five I can see we have significant problems to solve,” said Devoy, one of Ireland’s leading experts on global warming.

Cathal O’Mahony, a Coastal research scientist, said: “We’ve concentrated a lot of things along our coastline. Be it our urban centers, our road or rail networks and even our leisure time."

O’Mahony cautioned that certain areas of the coastline may have to be sacrificed.

“We need to make decisions on where perhaps we can defend and where we can retreat.”

Me thinks the good professor Devoy has had a wee bit too much of Jameson’s. I bet he also see leprechauns occasionally.

Very good observation; only don’t mention it to the History Channel. The equivalent to Nazi book burning has been taking place in our main stream media only on a much more massive scale. Anything that appears to contradict the “theory” of man caused global warming no longer makes it on the air. They cannot allow any historical data to cloud the issue. Any debate weakens the resolve of the true believers and could cause the death of millions or billions of the even those yet to be born. This however is the only issue where the left is concerned about the “unborn”.

I have watch some nature shows that report on how glaciers shaped our geology when the earth warmed and glaciers receded to the frozen north. And in the same program shortly after describing how the earth cooled (to form glaciers) and warmed to melt the glaciers they talked about the danger of man made global warming/climate change/cooling.

They present the evidence that climate changes, the earth cycles from cool to warm to cool again, yet somehow, 150 years of man made pollution (industrial revolution) is the cause of climate change.

None is so blind as those that refused to see.

Thanks for the info.

A lot more details here including how the sea wall dates back to 1795.

http://dublinportblog.com/2013/10/the-great-south-wall-poolbeg-lighthouse/

I found this bit interesting, and of course, no-one seems to use that reference mark now...

Historically, the Ordnance Survey Ireland used the low water mark of the spring tide on the 8th April 1837 at the Poolbeg Lighthouse as a standard height for all its maps, a practice which continued up until 1958.

Very good observation; only don’t mention it to the History Channel.

Yet they have run several programs which have made reference to or be the main topic about the Medieval Warm Spell (800s-1300s)! Today's temps are still apparently below that era's, proof being that Britain was growing wine grapes (historical writings) while even wild varieties cannot grow there now.

My BIG problem with Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) (original name before 'climate change') is that its proponents want to put the cart before the horse. While it appears that none of their climate models are capable of prediction, they are still very willing to spend and restrict to achieve a goal they cannot or will not specify! Ask the next proponent you meet this question, "What correction / change will you accept as sufficient to cease adding new regulations and/or restrictions to the general populace?"

Write if you can get any answer beyond general platitudes!

When we were at the James Joyce tower south of Dublin, we were in the middle of a major squall. Water was spraying high into the air up over the cliff, and the tower is on a fairly high cliff. They have some major storms in and around there. Nothing to do with globull warming.

As long as the Christian Brothers School at Killybegs is the first to go under, you'll be hearing few complaints from the alumni. As for the rest of the country, may God and Saint Patrick spare the pubs and St. Vincent dePaul Thrift Shoppes.

May I be the first to recommend a thorough study of the Maunder Minimum and the Milankovitch Glaciation Cycle. Seems that Earth's climate is somehow affected by the Sun. Farfetched, I know.

This did not affect the Irish.

Mt Everest was once at the bottom of the sea.
There are sea fossils in the yellow band of limestone. This guys worried about a little sea level rise, and land formations have forever risen and fallen.
